Thanks to Sam’s Club for sponsoring this post. I’m excited to share this killer workout with you all!

I have my first postpartum race coming up in a few months so I’ve made it a personal challenge to myself to run at least three times a week, and strength train 2-3 times a week, to prepare for the race. Eating healthier is also an ongoing challenge as I settle into life with a new baby (and very little sleep.)

Even though I successfully lost 50 pounds, and kept it off for years, maintaining a healthy weight is still something I have to actively work on every day. If I were to go back to my former way of eating (lots of fast food, booze and sugar) then I’d surely gain the weight back. Most days I find it easy to get motivated to workout. I love how I feel after. No matter how tired I am, or how blah I currently feel about my looks, the moment I finish a killer workout I feel like the best version of myself.

Still, I sometimes need a little extra motivation to workout and eat right. That’s when it’s fun to buy something that can help keep you on track, or try out a new workout. Here are some things I use to help add variety to my health and fitness and keep me motivated.

Fitness Trackers

I’ve tried out a lot of fitness trackers over the course of this blog. I tend to prefer those that are simple and straight forward like this Fitbit Charge HR. It tracks your heart rate, calories burned and has a caller ID function. Over all of the devices I’ve tried the heart rate feature is the only one I really need (seeing the number of calories burned go up during the day is so motivating)so keep that in mind when you are shopping for one and don’t spend $$$ on features you might not even use.

As healthy as I try to eat I sometimes need some extra help. Making sure my diet is balanced and I’m getting enough protein are my two  biggest struggles. I have a gigantic protein shake for dinner or a snack every day. I try to make one salad a day to get veggies in, and make one meal protein focused. This week that meal is split pea soup. Do you have any idea how much protein is in peas?! It’s amazing!

As well as I try to eat I still supplement with a multivitamin, Member’s Mark Omega 3-6-9 and a probiotic. Trying to implement new healthy habits can be challenging enough without having worry about constantly running out of something you use regularly. Sam’s Club is a great way to stock up on everything you need to stick to your resolutions this year.
Omega SupplementFitness Equipment

For years I worked out from home with nothing more than some free weights and workout DVDs. After moving to Alaska my husband and I invested in a treadmill as there was no way I was going running outside for a few months, and finding time to get to the gym regularly with a new baby was close to impossible. I love that Sam’s Club has treadmills and ellipticals for sale exclusively online like this amazing ProForm Pro 2000 Treadmill.

Even if you don’t have the means or desire to get a treadmill consider investing in a new piece of fitness equipment that can help add variety to your workout. Kettlebells, medicine balls, resistance bands and ankle weights are all good options (I love doing barre workouts with ankle weights!)

My favorite workout on the treadmill is running intervals. It makes the time go by so much faster and really helps me from getting too bored.

I created this workout to add some variety to my usual intervals and really focus on the lower body. Of course I forgot to add to the image to run a very slow 1/2 mile to warm up.

Don’t let its simplicity fool you. This is a tough workout! When it’s over you will have run over 2 miles, and done 100 squats, 200 lunges and 150 donkey kicks. Still too easy for you? Do the squats and lunges with weights. You’re welcome.Lower Body Treadmill Workout 1

If you are one of the lucky souls who live where it’s above 20 degrees outside you could certainly do this workout outside or on a track.

Getting, and staying, healthy doesn’t have to cost a lot or be a hassle. Shopping at places like Sam’s Club helps as it’s got everything you could need! I’d also encourage you to enlist the help of a friend, or join an online fitness community. Having outside motivation is huge for days that you just aren’t feeling it (which I promise you will happen!)  Join Sam’s Club #BetterYou Twitter Party taking place on Thursday, January 14 at 9:00 AM PST / 12:00 PM EST!

I laugh that we DO LIVE where it is a low of 30 degrees…but we be wimpy.
    The husband specifically.
Now, to get him to read and try this :-)

  • I always feel like my best self (total badass, actually) after a workout that really challenges me, too. I haven’t come across a better feeling yet.
I *need* a treadmill, but have no room. :(

Most treadmills fold up if that helps! I know about lack of room though. Even though our place is 4 bedrooms it’s only 1600 sq ft so they are all really tiny rooms, and we are both so stubborn neither of us will get rid of our living room sets, kitchen tables, or bedroom sets we had prior to getting married. So, we have a lot of shit.

      • I still have my kitchen table from before — it’s huge and I use it as a desk now. I have too much sentimental attachment to it to get rid of it.
The good part? You have a choice of couches!
I need to get more serious about treadmills, then. I can probably find *somewhere* to store it.
