Big News & Bigger News

Yesterday was truly epic! I woke up and had that “I’m going to kill it” feeling about my workout. The last 2 weeks I haven’t had as much energy for exercise as I normally do. It’s strange since I love it so much but I can only assume the stress from end of term is making it difficult for me to muster up the energy for doing anything, even things I really enjoy!

It was my 5k day and I started with 20 minutes of ab work first (Jillian Michael’s 6 week 6 pack – gotta love it!) then went straight out for a run. I finished my first mile in 8:24 which is way better than my normal 9:45-10 min pace. I’ve been doing sprints once a week and that’s helped me significantly with my speed. I’ve also been doing the long runs on the weekend (up to 8 miles) which make doing 3 seem like a piece of cake. So, I had the mentality today of “I’m going to go until my legs give out because it’s only 3.1 miles!”

My previous 5k PR that I ran shortly after my break-up in October (such good motivation!) was 28:41. Today I came in at exactly 28 minutes. It felt incredible.

I topped it off with heading straight back inside for my plank-a-day (which for me is about every 2-3 days) and added 20 seconds onto my prior PR.

Unstoppable!

  • I feel like you’ll find that that the studio will make you feel so much more open…I really love my house and its openness, and I couldn’t stand all the walls in my first (and only) apartment.

Congrats on the PR’s girl! Way to rock it, and another congrats on your new place!

You know, now that I posted that video and people have mentioned how much more open it will be, I feel like I’m suffocating in my place now. I want OUT!

  • Jessica says:

Oh, I am so happy for you. Moves are always cleansing. I lived in a studio with my baby … I could see her from every angle of the room and I loved it.
I also just thought of this “project” that I did years ago (I probably already told you about it):
The goal is to learn how to be happier with less. For 9 days, get rid of 27 things EACH day. The “things” can be actual possessions or negative thoughts. I got rid of my hair … lol. Not suggesting that, but getting rid of things with an intention helps to let go and clears the mind.
Happy moving! (Your PRs are AMAZING!)

    • Erica House says:

Awww that’s so sweet to think of you avec baby in a studio :) I completely forgot about your ‘project’ – getting rid of 27 things a day sounds impossible, but with how much I’m trying to purge this month for the move (and emotionally for the new year) this would be the perfect time!

Jessica, that’s a really interesting project! I love to clean out, and I’ve already cut my hair short (which is quite liberating), but negative thoughts! Hmmm…did they come back?

  • I moved to a studio this summer so I could be downtown/ closer to work. drive less/ save money and I was anxious at first, but OMG I LOVE it! I took moving as a time to get rid of every piece of clutter and I pretty much did! I think you will love it, especially since you’ll be saving money! A small space has sort of forced me to stay clean and organized and not let junk pile up which keeps me sane and happy ;) Good Luck! And congrats on your PR!

    • Erica House says:

I’m so ocd about my place being clean and spotless I think being in a smaller space will help me save time and stress! I’m SO glad you told me you love your place, hearing how fanatical others are about their studio apartments really is making this move easier for me. If you have any good storage tips or furniture/storage pieces you’ve found online please let me know – I’m on the hunt. I’ve got … 400 books and 200 DVD’s in particular I’m worried about finding room for!

  • Amanda says:

Congrats on the PRs and the new place!

  • organicallymo says:

Congrats on both the PR & your upcoming move!!! Such great & exciting news!

  • You are a speedy woman now!

Good luck with the move :)

  • Congats, girl! I was having such a hard time getting through my run yesterday, but this post is like a little pep talk for me. :)

    • Erica House says:

I’m so glad to hear that – thank you! I still have ‘bad’ days … my legs are made of cement, I can’t catch my breath,… but they are worth it to get to days like that!

  • Debbie Falls says:

Congrats on your speed and move! So liberating. The big question is: does the studio have a dishwasher?!

    • Erica House says:

Lol, NO it doesn’t! I’m used to it so it’s not a huge deal. Plus, only cooking once a week on Sundays makes it much easier to do the few dishes I use a day during the week.

  • Congrats on your PR!! That’s awesome and speedy! And great news on your move. I lived in a studio for a few years and I kind of liked it. I know that it’s an adjustment but I think that it will definitely be liberating.

  • Alissa N says:

Ooo such good news!! Congrats on the new PR and apartment!!! I have been considering moving lately, I am at a point where I think I am willing to sacrifice space for money. Especially if it means travel!!

    • Erica House says:

Honestly, at the end of a year I know I will experience much greater satisfaction from memories of travel and fun over the space a 2 bedroom apartment affords!

  • Congrats on the 5K pr and the move! I just pr’d this past weekend too… always an amazing feeling. I think you’ll love the studio, my sis-in-law lives in one and really enjoys it. The secret is to have secret storage. Every space is usable and there are so many secret hiding places that she has that you would never know about.
    Good luck!

    • Erica House says:

I’ve been obsessively reading online every night trying to find new ways to store things … I will never be able to look at a piece of furniture the same way again!

  • Caroline says:

Congrats on all the big PRs and moving! It sounds like this might be a great move for you, and while it’s smaller, it might feel much more light and open! Good luck packing.

    • Erica House says:

Ohhh don’t mention the ‘p’ word to me! I’m ignoring this is all happening until the term ends on Dec. 18th – then I’ll go into full on packing mode!

  • Congrats on your PR and that’s exciting about moving!!! I know it can be a hassle, but the change can be a great way to start fresh! :)

    • Erica House says:

I just looked at my phone last night and had a mini freak-out when I realized it’s happening in exactly 30 days! I just need to stay focused on the semester, then I can go into freak out and pack mode :)

  • Congrats on the move–how exciting! I lived in a tiny apartment by the beach a couple years ago. Living in a small place can be good because it kind of forces you to be a minimalist and stop acquiring new clothes and other things you don’t really need. :) You’ll also learn how to pack every nook and cranny of your studio with storage options. I ended up buying a bed from Ikea with pull-out drawers underneath and that was a huge lifesaver–I would store my summer clothes in my closet, winter clothes underneath the bed, and then swap them out when the seasons changed. It’s amazing how much stuff we keep in our closets that we don’t even really wear. The hardest part about my place was the kitchen–it was so small the fridge didn’t open all the way–made cooking quite the challenge! :) Wishing you all the best with the move!

    • Erica House says:

I’ve been stalking IKEA’s website almost nightly. I live hours away from one so it’s hard to make such a big purchase online without seeing stuff first! I’m lucky with my studio the kitchen is huge – if it wasn’t I couldn’t take it. With how often I cook that and the bathroom are the two places that must be up to par for me to live in a place. The rest can be an empty box for all I care lol.
