I signed up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library a few weeks ago and thought it was too good to be true. Until my first free book came, and we have about 54 more to look forward to. There was a made for TV movie on last month about Dolly Parton's life. I didn't catch the movie but it did prompt me to look her up online. It drives Travis nuts but I don't think I can go a few hours without googling something. I just have to know everything about everything.
So, in reading up on good ol' Dolly I read that she started this amazing project called Imagination Library.
In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly's vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.
I wish I had words adequate enough to express how much I love her for this. I grew up in a household that fostered a love of reading. I was the kid who would fight bedtime each night because I wanted "just 10 more minutes to read!" Even now my favorite place to be in my house is surrounded by my book collection. Reading has always brought me comfort, let me have wild adventures, and taught me so much. Decades of research exist that show the amazing effects reading at an early age has on later academic achievement.

Imagination Library will send a book out every month from birth to age 5. All you have to do is sign up for it! If you have kids under 5, know of anyone with kids that age, or know someone who is pregnant - pass the info along! You see the list of books they sent out last year. The first and last book they send is customized. How adorable is that? I'm so glad I found this program and hope that some of you can take advantage of it as well!
