Last year I posted about Thanksgiving at my parents house. I had a slice of pie before the meal officially started, and approxmiately ever hour after I'd announce that it was "pie:30" (Like 1:30 or 2:30) and grab myself another piece. Moral of the story: I LOVE pie. Fortunately, I've married someone who shares my affinity for the sweet treat as well so I decided to try to think of a new spin on an old favorite.
Last week I swung by Walmart to pick up some Mrs. Smith pies and Cool Whip (here's a coupon for $1 off a Mrs. Smith pie with the purchase of Cool Whip!) I knew Travis's favorite was apple, but didn't know if he'd want the traditional apple, or dutch oven apple strudel. I wish you could have heard the shock in his voice when I called him over the fact that I even had to ask. Apple strudle it is!
Words cannot express how fun it was to just dive fork first into a warm apple pie.
For the apple pie I pre-portioned it into small mason jars. I figured it would be a more fun way to eat it, and MUCH easier to store! Travis and I both really eating the pie cold, straight from the fridge, and with a big spoonful of Cool Whip on it. Next time I do this I'm going to put a cup of vanilla ice cream at the bottom of the jar before putting the warm pie in to serve right away. Heavenly!
For the pumpkin pie I put the entire thing into a mason jar (minus most of the crust, which I ate) and I'll be adding a few tablespoons of it to my oatmeal every morning. Just the thought of how good it will taste is making my mouth water.
