Protein in a Vegetarian Diet + Pure Protein Giveaway!

I can't believe this vegetarian stereotype hasn't been broken yet, but I'm almost always asked the same two questions when people find out that I don't eat meat: (1) Why?

(2) How do you get protein?

I find the second ironic since I'm sure I get more protein now than I did when I was a meat eater! Since becoming a vegetarian I've had to really research the best natural sources of protein as well as protein supplements for when my activity level calls for an increase consumption of protein.

I will be doing a full post tomorrow on what my typical day looks like in terms of food and nutritional content but I average about 70-90 grams of protein a day on a 1400-1600 calorie diet. I'd like to think that's pretty impressive! Over half of my protein comes from natural sources; oatmeal, beans, eggs, quinoa, nuts and lentils are some of my favorites.

Some of my best protein-packed vegetarian recipes are:

Pumpkin and Black Bean Soup

As much protein as I eat from natural sources I also enjoy supplementing with protein bars and drinks. I work absolutely ridiculous hours and there are times when I'm not able to cook something (or even have access to a microwave) so I grab a protein bar to go or bring a cold shake. Years ago when I first started eating protein bars I wasn't reading the nutritional labels an I was basically eating glorified candy bars they were ridiculously high in sugar and full of awful chemicals. #HealthyLivingFail

Thankfully, I've become much more aware of what I consume and I make it a point to use high quality protein products like Pure Protein. Full disclosure: I tried some of their bars a few years ago and I wasn't exactly a fan. I can't specifically remember why but the taste didn't 'wow' me and I hadn't bought any since then. I'm so glad I decided to give them another shot because they are incredible.

I tried both the Chocolate Deluxe and the Chocolate Peanut Butter while in New Orleans this past weekend and I was floored with how much the flavors and consistency have improved since the last time I tried them. If you tried them  before and didn't love them please do yourself a favor and give them another chance. The bars have one of the best calorie-to-protein ratios I've ever seen. The Chocolate Deluxe is only 180 calories and has 20 grams of protein!

I was excited to try out their protein powder in my morning oatmeal since the last brand I purchased was a total let-down (it tasted like chalk!) I hesitated putting half a scoop in my 1/2 cup of oatmeal but a few moments later I was feasting on (what tasted like) chocolate breakfast oatmeal cookie batter! I kicked it up a notch and added a few drops of Chocolate flavored liquid stevia. I've made this as a dessert a few times already.

The pre-made shakes are equally tasty and they have a lid so I can only have half at a time and save the rest. It's perfect since I've been using half in my morning green smoothies!Feb4
