I may not always act like it but I'm grateful to have pretty awesome parents. My Dad will drive 90 minutes round trip at the drop of a hat if I'm having car problems, spend the weekend at my place watching over my crazy cat and is always down to be my hiking buddy. Mom has always been the one to give me advice on life stuffs. I didn't pay much attention to it until the last few years. Either she's gotten much smarter or I'm finally wising up - still trying to decide what happened.
When I was 21 I worked at a video rental store and had recently broken up with my fiancée. I can hardly believe I was engaged at one point! It feels like an entire lifetime ago and we were only engaged for about 2 months before I broke it off (and paid for the ring for 12 months after.) Note to girls: I don't care how bad his credit is never put your engagement ring in your name! I started seeing my boss at the video store and after a few weeks came home to find this note from Mom in my bedroom:
Even though we did break up a few weeks later Stephan was one of the best guys I ever dated. Now, eight years later, all of the advice she gave me then still rings true for me today. I love that she has always encouraged me to find a way to support myself, act like a lady (that took a while to catch on) and understand how my behavior impacts the way people, especially guys, see me.
I feel like I am a totally different person now compared to who I was then. Without a doubt part of that is due to the guidance from my parents. I'm so fortunate to have such a wonderful relationship with my family and thank them for helping me become the happy and healthy person I am toady.
