Fitness Friday: Being Awesome Edition

Workout Wrap Up

Feb 7I had a killer week in workouts! Last week I lamented about being bored with my current workout routine. Since I still don’t want to pony up money for a contract gym membership, I’ve decided to try and find ways to push myself out of my comfort zone at home and with my running. I really want to get to a sub 2 hour half marathon and I’ve woefully neglected speedwork since my marathon in November. So, I’m going to try to do one hardcore speed day a week, and start varying up my other workouts with more afternoon workouts at the gym between classes (so I can take advantage of their bikes and group fitness!)

My extra work is already starting to pay off. My weight has stayed the same since last month but I’m down 1% body fat. Muscle mass, baby!
2014-02-04 07.28.26I thought I was going to die before I made it to 5 miles on the stationary. I haven’t been on a bike in almost a year and clearly I need to get those muscles back in shape! One thing that keeps me motivated on indoor cardio equipment is good tunes. A few weeks ago I was able to try out a pair koss headphones through a campaign with Fitfluential and I absolutely love them still. They are on sale for $19.99 at Walgreens for a limited time (normally $30!) so if your on the market for a pair definitely check them out!
2014-02-05 15.52.20The added workouts means I need to be extra diligent about recovery. I always foam roll after every run, but I’m going back to doing trigger point at least twice a week, and wearing my compression socks after hard runs.
2014-02-03 10.09.27Random photo of my friends dog from earlier this week, because he’s amazing. Look at that adorable under-bite!2014-02-02 16.19.09One of the most surprisingly entertaining moments this week came from a quick trip to Target. I stopped by the cards to see if they had one from ‘the cat’. They did, and I’m fairly certain if I get any Valentines this year it will be this one.
2014-02-05 16.15.29I came across these throwback 90’s lunch staples. I’ve gone full-fledged 90’s mode with my TV watching lately. I hardly turn the tube on during the day but every night I’ll throw on Saved by the Bell or Full House when I’m going to bed. I use television for comfort like most people use food! There’s just something about watching my favorite shows from childhood that immediately make me feel less stressed. During 4 months of marathon training last year I turned Friday nights into unofficial TGIF throwbacks and would only watch shows that used to be on TGIF. Seeing these snacks inspires me to have a totally 90’s weekend. Eat only 90’s food, wear 90’s fashions …. would that make me crazy? (Or awesome?)

Finally, as I was perusing the peanut butter selection, this young kid (couldn’t have been more than 23/24) came up to me and claimed he was a peanut butter connoisseur. I laughed (because clearly he has no idea how much PB I’ve consumed) and we engaged in a short witty banter revolving around PB. I could feel myself starting to blush (I turn into a 12 year old when I realize people are flirting with me) and looked down and realized I was holding these vitamins for women over 50 in my hand. #iDied #TheyWereOnSale

2014-02-04 16.12.43I’ve become obsessed with chips and bean dip. Twice this week I killed an entire bag + can as dinner. I can’t believe I’ve never tried popchips before because OMG they taste like regular potato chips! 2014-02-06 15.31.32Requisite Salem photo:

Yesterday I had an appointment to get my hair cut. I normally just get a trim, but I asked if there was any way she could cut it that would give it more body. She explained a technique she recently started using on clients asking for something similar and I figured yolo – go for it.

Loved it! Easily one of my favorite haircuts ever. Will try to get better photos of it – she basically cut an extreme exaggerated layer starting about chin length and blending it down about 2 inches, then cut my regular layers more toward the bottom.
2014-02-06 14.49.49Rain is on the agenda again this weekend. I was running in shorts and a tank top Monday and it was 35 degrees at lunch again Thursday. Florida weather needs to make up its damn mind! I’m hoping to get in a long run 12-15 miles, maybe check out a new yoga studio and do some antiquing. I’d like to say I will work on my book proposal, but I know I won’t.

What are your plans this weekend?

When is the last time you tried a new hair cut?

  • awwww kitty valentine’s i need to get that for david!!!

  • The sun is out today so I am off out for a run soon! This weekend I need to correct other GTA’s grade sheets for spelling mistakes, and write an abstract proposal for a conference.

The last time I did anything crazy with my hair, cut wise, was about 2 years ago, when I cut it really short and tapered, so it was longer in the front and shorter in the back. Now I’m growing it out and am trying to be patient about it as my hair seems to grow so slow (despite what my roots tell me every 2 months!). If I had the money I’d probably get extensions so I could stop waiting for it to grow the last few inches.

I don’t have anything constructive to comment, I just wanted to say that you have posted some of my favourite things – popchips, fruit gushers and fruit rollups! I moved to the UK and am so glad popchips have come over here…what is not so great is that a box of fruit gushers or rollups are £7….!

Love the hair as well! Just got mine cut for the first time in over a year and it’s amazing how a new haircut makes you feel.

I went years without getting a hair cut as my bf was a hair dresser and just did it at home. After we split up I think it still took me about a year before I went to a salon. I’m such a cheapskate.

I’ve heard ‘americanized’ food is much more expensive in the UK. I love me some gushers but I don’t think I’d spend £7 on them!

Old lady vitamins, whoop whoop! haha!! That’s funny!

Love your hair, and the pic of Salem.

Can you give me a virtual kick in the ass to workout? I am so bored and un-motivated with Crossfit right now! Blaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I can’t do diddly this weekend because I messed up my budget! Wah! So, I will be reading the third book in the Hunger Games series, working out, and sitting on my butt with my bulldog :)

  • I LOVE your hair girl!! I want your kitty… and your puppy! Too precious! xoxo

  • Love the new hair! It’s similar to my style right now- I love long hair, but it needs to have body. I’ve always mine long, but got a wild hair up my ass about 6 years ago and cut it slightly below my chin….I wore a hat or pulled it back for a good year while it grew out, haha. I received a job offer earlier this week so I’ll be celebrating tonight- woohoo! Have a good one!

    • Erica House says:

      Congrats on the job offer!

Starting in high school I’d let my hair grow out to about as long as it is now, chop it off to my shoulders, and then grow it out again. I haven’t cut it short in years, but I feel the time may be coming soon!

  • Having a 90s weekend would definitely make you AWESOME :) always enjoy your posts! Have a great weekend!

Oh my goodness…the card. I absolutely love cards and Papyrus makes the most amazing ones. Salem is too cute. I think I may do something funky with my hair next time I go in :)

  • I’m totally turning to you for my get back into shape inspiration! I have a few more weeks until I hit the “6 weeks post-partum” exercise okay, though I’ve been doing some light strength training & walking in the mean time. I’m going to get back into running again & have plans to do a half marathon at the end of the summer, so I’ll definitely be looking into some good head phones for listening to tunes while I run.

I haven’t had my hair cut by a professional in 6 months! I actually have been cutting my own hair the past few times, though I’d love to have my hair professional cut sometime soon.

    Love your hair cut!

    • Erica House says:

As frugal as I am I know I’d butcher my hair if I tried to cut it myself! I’m thrifty with everything else so I don’t mind paying $25 every 3-4 months for a cut (I lucked out and found a very reasonably priced stylist who does a great job!)

I can’t wait to follow you along as you train for your half!

  • Haha omg that dog is SO adorable… by the way, what breed is your cat?

  • Lynn says:

I really like your hair. And, I would love to get valentine’s cards from my cats.

  • I just got a new haircut last Friday – she used a different technique for layering and I’m not sure I’m loving it, but working through the adjustment phase! :) Happy weekend!

    • Erica House says:

I consider myself pretty low-maintenance, but I can kind of freak when people change my hair drastically. Thankfully, it’s hardly noticeable and I do really love it. I told her as long as she kept the length she could pretty much do whatever she wanted!

  • Kelsey says:

Don’t know if I’ll commit to something new, but I’m getting my haircut cut on my birthday this coming Saturday, and the plan is to just add some layers in and give it a trim! =) I’m hoping for some fun and sort of choppy layers!
