I’ve been meaning to try making a green smoothie for months now. It’s one of those ideas I get stuck on that I perpetually put off until one day I realize that bag of spinach is about 2 hours away from going bad and immediate action is necessary. I’ve heard that Green Smoothies (smoothies based on spinach, kale or some other green) are almost magical in their energy providing properties. There’s some science behind it but basically the blending action breaks down the greens so much that your body can absorb more of the nutrients.
I was pleasantly surprised that despite the 2 cups of spinach I used it tasted almost identical to my usual fruit smoothies. Here is the basic recipe I used:
– 2 cups Spinach (added first so other ingredients weight it down)
– 1 cup frozen strawberries
– 1/2 frozen banana
– 1/2 cup almond milk
Next time I think I’ll add some vanilla protein powder and maybe a handful of blueberries. As it states above the recipe produces 1 smoothie that’s approximately 150 calories.
