Happiness is a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

March 13th, 2013 | Posted by Erica House in Health | Life

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior.

I’ve always believed in the Law of Attraction and since starting my Happiness Challenge last week I’m even more of a believer. The more time I spend thinking of how to be nice to others, and let myself be open to love and kindness in return, the more amazing things start to manifest in my life! Seriously – adorable cute amazing unexpected things like job offers and a few other things which I’m going to keep a secret just because they are so perfectly mine.

p.s. if you haven’t seen or read ‘The Secret‘ yet, you should do so.

I’ll be totally truthful: I haven’t been meditating every day. I don’t know what it is about getting into the practice that is so difficult for me but it’s always something I manage to put off all day. It’s only freaking 5 minutes! I can think of a dozen times, at least, throughout the day I could stop when I’m doing to meditate (like, now!) and yet I don’t. Hey – it’s work in progress.

I am making it a point to try to do thoughtful/kind things as much as possible. It started when I went shopping this weekend and picked up some much needed Spring clothes. I did a little photo shoot with Salem today to show off my new dress!

When I put the clothes away I made sure to find some to donate. I probably could get rid of a lot more than just this but it’s a start!

I also asked my friends on facebook if anyone was interested in a free men’s bike. That dude left it here when he moved a few months ago and I’m not sure why it took me so long to pawn it off! A friend said he was interested so he stopped by to grab it while I was teaching Monday night…..2013-03-11 14.42.06

and left this on my doorstep as a ‘thank you’! How sweet is that? If I would have known I’d have scored free wine and chocolate out of the deal I would have pitched his shit months ago ;)

I also received a totally random thank you card in the mail from one of the girls I sent a Valentine to last month!

Are you a believer of putting good energy out in the world yet? I’ll leave you with one of my favorite Happiness videos we watch in class – it always get’s a few lol’s from my students and I promise it will give you a nice refresher on applying happiness to your every day life!

How is your Happiness Challenge going? What’s been your favorite ‘act of kindness’ this week?

Erica I am so glad your happiness challenge is working so well for you! I am doing it too, and meditating is difficult for me as well. I have plenty of opportunities, yet I always find an excuse not to. However, I am stopping this comment and going to do it right now. Have an amazing day :) <3

I’m committing to doing it right after I exercise today! I’ve found that time seems to work best for me, I”ll stretch and then meditate for 5 minutes I’m glad I’m not the only one spending more time thinking about meditating, than actually doing it!

By taking care of #1 (YOU!) you are so much more equipped to take care of all others. I am going to try to think of a way to be extra kind to myself today!

  • YEAAHHH I love daily affirmations for me that’s the biggest part of the secret that I can apply. I am doing the deepak meditation challenge now and force myself to do it the second i get up so i don’t make excuses

Let me know what you think at the end of his challenge! I checked it out and it looks like he will be doing them regularly after this first one. I’d love to try it out and hopefully be more motivated to stick with it daily!

I love The Secret, I think it’s brilliant but ill be honest, I have trouble getting in the habit of meditating too. Instead, I do self hypnosis. It’s easier and it’s okay if I drift off. Hopefully soon I can get to meditation too. And I love your new dress! I wish it was warm enough in Chicago for dresses already! Ahh

Ans so is your dress :)

  • Taking care of thy self :)

    p.s. that cartoon is hilarious!

  • Dang, that dress looks GOOD! I love it! Also, I recently hopped onto your happiness project and this post about throwing good energy into the world is awesome. So thanks! I’m awful at meditating but I know my brain wants to get into it. I’ve been journaling, though, so I’m working on it!

Awww thank you! I feel so pretty in it :) I love your phrase “throwing good energy into the world” – that’s basically exactly what I’m trying to do!

  • Had to write. I know we went thru break ups around the same time. We seem to be on the same spiritual path, too. You doing the Happiness project. Me doing Deepak Chopra and Oprah. And lots of studying and practice about gratitude and the law of attraction. Its been awesome. And I’ve definitely seen the law of attraction in practice. LOL Good and bad.

Love watching Shawn. Always saying good stuff. And thank you for mentioning the documentary. I will need to check that out. I noticed I practice much of what takes part in the happiness project already – journaling, gratitude, kindness… its amazing the clarity I’ve gained and the love make a complete circle. Definitely self-growing. And am quite happy at this moment.

And that dress looks fab on you. Keep up the {happy} work. It showing positive results.

So many people are doing the Deepak meditation challenge – I love it! Please let me know what you think when it’s over. Also, let me know if you come across any particularly good books/resources while reading up on gratitude or the law of attraction. I’ve got a week off soon for Spring Break and would love some new reading material!

Isn’t that talk by Shawn awesome? I’m actually showing it in class tonight as we discuss the Chapter on Stress and Health.

So glad to hear you are quite happy at the moment. Same here :)

  • 1st – love that TED video (going to share it on my blog)… It reminds me of one of my favorite sayings “Think into existence”.

2nd – Am I the only guy that reads / responds on your blog? :) Who cares – I like it.

3rd – (hope this doesn’t sound weird coming from a guy) but – I love that sun dress on you.

I definitely have a few other guys that read – the males just tend to not comment as often! My site demographics tell me about 30% of my visitors are dudes.
