As I’ve said before in my review of Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred I’m kind of obsessed with this woman.

Out of the multiple Jillian DVD’s I own this is the most used and loved. Don’t let the title fool you though – it works WAY more than just your abs! A lot of her moves involve the butt and thighs and there is a significant amount of ab work done in plank so your shoulders get a fantastic workout as well.

While you can do the workout without any weights I would suggest you have at least a 3 to 5 pound weight on hand to do some of the moves as your core strengthens. The DVD is broken down into two 30 minute workouts (level 1 and level 2). Each workout starts out with a brief warm-up then a full circuit of varying ab moves. After the first circuit you go through all the moves again but in double time. Level 2 is much harder than level 1 and it took me about a month to be able to complete it without feeling like someone stabbed me in the kidney the next day.

If I can get the courage up to actually show off my abs one day I can illustrate how effective this workout has been for me. I will do it 2-3 times a week in addition to core work in my other workouts like pilates or circuit training. While I don’t have the stellar 6 pack like Jillian does I have noticed my waist shrinking and my lower abs particularly strengthened (You know, the dreaded lower belly kangaroo pouch).

One tip for this dvd: sometimes I like it best when used in combo with another activity and only going through the first circuit of the level. For example, I try to work out for 45 minutes a day so one day I may start with her Ripped in 30 DVD then follow it up with just 15 minutes of ab work from this DVD. Or, when I’m feeling particularly mean, I’ll make Matt do it with me at home before we go out and run.

As with all my reviews if you have any questions about the workout or would like recommendations for similar DVD’s please ask! After trying enough crappy home workout DVD’s I love being able to share those that are effective and easy to accomplish with very limited equipment. See my ‘home gym’ below for proof!

It is seriously amazing … I’ve been alternating between this and Extreme Shed and Shred lately but Ripped in 30 is always my ‘go to’ dvd when I don’t feel like a long workout (and still want to get my butt kicked!)

No problem! This DVD Is absolutely one of my top 3 favorites of all time. I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed Ripped in 30 yet. I LOVE it! Just as good as 30 Day Shred.

I’m super late (I see that the review was written sometime last year), but I had a question about this ab workout because I’ve been on the hunt for one that will actually give me results. I just recently lost 8lbs (goal is about 5-10 more) by changing my diet alone, which is what was suggested for me if I was really serious about some ab definition (which I AM!). So now I’m searching for something that will really start to tone up my midsection. You said that you preferred just doing one circuit of level one mixed in with other exercises–is there a particular reason for this? Are the other circuits less helpful? I ask because I am chronically unmotivated to workout–between time commitments and any other excuse I can come up with, I just rarely follow through with working out–but I don’t have time or money for a trainer so I look for all in one videos so that I don’t have to come up with combinations of workout routines on my own and mix and match (I’ll talk myself out of this VERY easily). I’d just like to know how effective this DVD is and/or whether you have any other suggestions. I will say that although it takes me forever to start working out, I will admit that I LOVE feeling the burn the next day (it’s my way of knowing that I actually did something). Thanks so much!

One of my favorite quotes says something like ‘abs are made in the gym, and reveled in the kitchen.’ It is so true! Congratulations on losing 8 pounds already, I’m sure the next 5-10 will come off and you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make. The reason I sometimes just do the first half of one of the levels is that I typically like to workout for 45-60 minutes at a time, and just doing 1 level (30 minutes) isn’t enough for me (but for most people it is absolutely enough!) So, I’ll do one of Jilians all over workouts (like 30 day shred) for 30 minutes, then do just 15 of abs after to finish it off. I still think this is the best ab workout I’ve ever done!
