Jillian Michaels ‘Banish Fat Boost Metabolism’ DVD Review

November 3rd, 2012 | Posted by Erica House in Reviews

I am honestly shocked that I have not done a review yet for this for it is absolutely one of my favorite fitness DVD’s. I’ve been using Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism for almost 4 years now and it is still a challenging workout for me! The workout is serious cardio – my heart rate gets up to about 150 before the warm up is even over and stays there almost the entire 50 minutes. There are 7 separate circuits, each contain 5 moves that you repeat twice, and each circuit lasts for about 5 minutes. The beauty of that set-up is no matter how bad it gets, you can tell yourself that you only need to make it through 5 minutes before it’s on to something else!

Each move lasts 30 seconds and the quick pace of the workout makes it fly by. Most of the circuit are done standing and you’ll see a lot of squat based moves, kicking, punches and standing ab work. For one circuit she does have you lay down on a mat to really focus on the abs and have you do some work in plank so your upper arms get to join the party.

If I’m ever in the mood to be really brutal to myself I’ll put on some ankle weights and do the routine. That’s only happened a few times though and it doesn’t matter how good of shape I may be in now – my thighs always hurt from this the next day (in the best way possible!)

One of the biggest perks of this DVD is it requires zero equipment so this is the one I’ll bring with me anytime I’m out of town. I actually brought it to a hotel once and forgot my computer so I couldn’t play it and managed to write down the routine and do it from memory! My other love for this is the ridiculous ab workout you get without even realizing it. I think one move is done while laying on your back and a few she points out while standing are focusing on the abs but every single move really engages your core and helps get sick ab definition.

If you have any questions at all about the workout please let me know – I love, love, love this DVD and would recommend it 100% to anyone looking for a great way to do cardio at home without expensive equipment!

I usually burn about 300 calories in an hour when I do this workout!

Any recommendations for other great home cardio DVD’s?

I love Jillian workouts. They are brutal.

I knew she was for real when I realized I’ve been doing this same workout for over a year and it still hurts. Yet, it’s totally accessible for beginners!

  • i’m not a big fan of workout dvds! I get pretty bored fast! Oh well. It looks fun though!

You definitely have to have a lot of self motivation to keep on a ‘strict’ workout routine when it’s at home! Having a gym membership makes you more accountable – and gives you way more options. Deep down I’m just really, really lazy and know I wouldn’t make that drive to the gym as often as I should :)

I love this workout when I can’t get on the treadmill!! It is kick ass. Circuit 2 is so hard and circuit 6 is death and everything in between is still challenging.

    • Erica House says:

I definitely think the first 2 circuits are the worst! By the time I get to circuit 3 I’m actually looking forward to jumping jacks and high knees! How sick is that!?

      • Jodi says:

I think the 6th is the worst. All that jumping. I pretty much just dread that one the whole time. I tell myself the whole time, circuit one is ok, 2 is hard, three is easy, 4 and 5 go quickly, 6 is hell, and it’s all downhill in 7. LOL. I did level 1 of either the shred or ripped in 30 once after Banish Fat. Once. And I have done Banish Fat while holding 3-5lb weights for most of the moves several times and that is killer!

You are a crazy woman!! I actually did BFMB a few times with ankle weights …. I think I may use those next time now that I remember I have them! I’m much stronger on my lower body though (Hence not minding the jumps in circuit 6) but my upper body strength is that of a 12 year old.

          • Jodi says:

My upper body is weaker but not super weak. I played softball all my life and was a catcher, so my legs are strong but big, unfortunately. I just really know how to push my limits or maybe I should say force through things because of all the years of college softball. I remember my freshman year, we had to run a timed mile and a half in 12 min the first week we were there and the returners had to run it in 11:30. If you didn’t make it, you had extra conditioning at 6am til you re-ran it and passed. I kept telling myself I would just push myself because “it was only a mile and a half and I could do anything for 12 min” and somehow I managed in right about 11:30 having never really run in my life. Then the first time we ran 3 miles, I thought I was going to DIE. LOL.

          • Erica House says:

Woah – I think I would have passed out trying! Still, as a ‘runner’ I don’t know if I could manage to find the motivation to do 1.5 miles in 12 minutes! You definitely have an iron will!

  • I have Jillian’s 6week/6pack and love it! Thanks for reviewing this, I wanted something new soon! :)

  • I just bought a Jillian DVD because it was on super ridiculous sale. I am hoping that once my injury is healed I can do it in addition to my running.

Im so so so the last woman on earth who has NEVER done anything JM!!

    • Erica House says:

You need to get on that Miz! She’s wonderful and kicking your butt in the most amazing way possible. I doubt she can show you anything you don’t already know ;)

I love this video (and all my other Jillian videos). It is hard to find a cardio video that doesn’t use any weights but is still challenging enough and this one is perfect! For some reason I like to do a 60 minute workout so I repeat of the circuits – but I try to pick one of the “easier” ones :)

    • Erica House says:

You are a crazy person!! I can’t even imagine getting to the end of the working and thinking “You know what, I think I want some more of this!”

Hey Erica! After a thorough web search Ι came to the conclusion that this is one of the best cardio workout videos. Nevertheless, since I am a total cardio beginner (I have only been practicing pilates for two months now) I would like to ask your opinion. With how many circuits should I start? Would you suggest a circuit combination?

    • Erica House says:

Hmmm…I’d say to just try and do as much of the DVD as you can. When I first started I had to take a LOT of breaks, but that’s okay! The whole workout is about 50 minutes so you can always plan to just do half, but I’d say to just try to do as much as possible (within reason!) and see how far you can get through the workout. Let me know what you think of it!

      • Alkmini says:

OMG!I could only do one and a half circuit!!Hahaha…I am such o coach potato!!I prefer circuits 1-5-7…I am going to make a mix of those :-)

        • Erica House says:

We all started somewhere! I couldn’t hold myself up in plank for more than a few seconds when I started working out! Good for you for trying!

  • Alkmini says:

Oh!I forgot to ask you if you could suggest any cardio video/dvd for beginners. I have a problem with my joints in general so o lots of hops and bounches aggravate my knees :-(
    Thank you again in advance!

Let me start by saying I love Jillian Michaels. She has a perfect body and is so positive and motivating. I used her products however and I was not happy with the results. They have alot of caffeine in them and it made me jittery. I now use the Dr. Max Powers Burn and ive lost about 10 lbs in a week, and I do not feel the jitters like I did with Jillian’s product.
