Jillian Michaels Killer Ab DVD Review

September 25th, 2012 | Posted by Erica House in Reviews

Any of you who follow me on twitter saw the picture I posted the day Killer Abs came out. I rushed over to Best Buy to purchase it like some exercise obsessed child on Christmas.

Obviously I was pretty excited to get her latest release. As you can tell by all my other reviews I really, really like her.

Unfortunately, this workout was a bit disappointing.

KIller Abs

I’ve been using her Six Week Six Pack for almost a year now and it’s still one of my favorite ab workouts. This DVD has 3 levels and they are split up into 4 circuits each (her prior DVD has 2 levels with 2 circuits each). Initially, I thought I’d like that change as it would allow her to include more exercises and get a better overall workout.

I started off with level 2 and I felt lost half the time. Her description of how to do some of the moves is terrible and by the time I caught on to how to do them we were moving on to the next one. I’m an at home workout Queen, I can pick up on trainers cues pretty damn quick and if I’m feeling lost and uncoordinated I know I’m not the only one. I checked out what other people are saying on Amazon and I’m not alone. People either rate it 1 star or 5. I’ve now completed all 3 levels and I have to say level 1 was my favorite! I felt it the most in my abs but it still pales in comparison to her first DVD.

At least now I can justify buying a new DVD to try from Amazon soon!

What’s the last workout DVD you were disappointed by?

  • Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that the DVD was challenging to follow. I’m usually pretty good with picking up the queues as well. Last DVD set I tried was P90X a couple of months ago and fell in LOVE with it!

    • Erica House says:

I’ve never done any of the P90x workouts! My bf has some of them on his computer though so I’ll have to give them a shot next time I get a dud DVD :)

  • I have been looking for good ab workout, but haven’t been able to find one. I actually just bought this one yesterday, but I think I am going to return it now. Thanks for the review! xo

    • Erica House says:

If you really wanted to try it I think it may be okay once you get the hang of the moves. But, if you could return it and grab her other one (6 week 6 pack) I think it is much better!

  • Jodi says:

I have 6 week 6 pack and it is a great workout. Even if I feel level 2 more in my butt and thighs than in my abs. ;) I’ll pass on this one knowing it is not as good. I have most of her DVDs and Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, Killer Buns and Thighs, and either of the “30” dvds are my go-tos. Banish Fat never gets easier. I hate it. And I mean that in the best sense of the word. :) I would seriously rather run 6 miles on my treadmill than do BFBM, because I dread circuit 6 that much.

    • Erica House says:

Lol – I LOVE and HATE Banish Fat! It’s amazing! I may actually do it this afternoon since I skipped my workout this morning :) One of the reasons why I love 6 week 6 pack so much is because it really is a total body workout and a killer ab routine. Her moves in that dvd are just magic. I think there was no way another ab dvd could have lived up to my expectations!

  • I did not like the Dancing with the Stars cardio DVD…it was on sale…I blame myself ;)

  • Lauren says:

What a bummer! I’ve actually been thinking about trying out a Jillian Michaels DVD or two when the temperatures get colder in the morning. I’ll be sure to avoid this one!

    • Erica House says:

I am still ridiculously in love with her and credit her earlier DVD’s with helping me get started on my fitness path. Definitely check out 6 week 6 pack or 30 Day Shred if you want to start with two of her better ones that are absolutely appropriate for beginners (and advanced!) athletes.

  • Nanci says:

Those are some killer arms, girl! You are definitely an inspiration.:)

  • Elle says:

just a hint… check out 60 second clips of DVDs you are interested in on a web site called Collage Video – I never one without previewing it there first.

sorry you were disappointed in this one.. but thanks for saving me some dough!

    • Erica House says:

I know I know I totally jumped into this purchase without doing my usual research! I should have looked more into it but I was just so excited I had to go out and buy it the day it came out. Lesson learned!

  • oh no! I don’t have a lot of DVD’s but in general am a fan of Jillian’s workouts, super glad you gave this review though so I can get her other DVD instead

    • Erica House says:

I actually debated on not posting a review since it would be negative but I thought it would be worth it so others wouldn’t be disappointed. The whole reason I do reviews is to educate people to make better decisions with their hard earned money – I guess my mission is accomplished!

  • Joa says:

I think it varies depending on the person. I recently bought her Extreme Shed And Shred and i dread that DVD. Not because of the “intensity” some of the work out’s seem pretty ridiculous. I loved her 30 day shred though! . Yesterday i just purchased her Kill Abs DVD and I’m looking forward to it.. I hope i get results! <3

  • linnea says:

Ive looked online everywhere. How many calories do you burn in the first level?

    • Erica House says:

I burn about 150 doing the 30 minutes of level 1 (and 2) but how many calories you burn will differ dramatically from person to person! It depends on weight and your heart rate. I would guess that most people who do the workout would burn closer to 200 calories.

  • Elizabeth says:

I love JM dvds but my favorite is No More trouble Zones. I am always excited to try her new ones but always go back to my faves. Banish fat dvd is always a fave too in that love to hate it sort of way.

    • Erica House says:

NMTZ is one of the best overall strength workouts I’ve done and BFMB is probably one of my top 3 workout DVD’s of all time. If I’m feeling really mean I’ll even wear ankle weights when I do it!

  • Isabella says:

I just bought this video earlier but i read all the reviews which makes me want return it im having a quince and i really neeed lose weight for my big day because my dress is very princesy and fittied :) any help D:

  • Kara says:

I loved Killer Abs, and I have all her DVD’s. It goes really fast, and it works. You just have to be patient, and do the work. It definitely burns the calories! I’m dripping with sweat!!! Hello endorphins!!

  • Melissa says:

I just ordered BFBM and can’t wait to try it. I started out with 30 day shred then did Killer Abs’ and then 6 week 6 pack and I agree that 6 week 6 pack is way better but now I’m doing a level of 6 week 6 Pack and a level of Killer Abs.

  • I can see my waist again! says:

I been doing this workout DVD for 3 months now. I started with Level 1 and worked my way up to Level 3. I’ve tried a lot of abs workouts for many, many years and nothing really made a dent on my abs. But this one did wonders. My abs are lifted, back fat gone, love handles almost gone and my lower pooch is almost gone. I lost 80% of my abs in 3 months. MY bf is impressed with the results EVERY time I workout to this DVD. Jillian is a genius. This DVD is mostly for people with stubborn belly fat that doesn’t go away with other workouts.

    • Erica House says:

Isn’t this the best ab workout EVER?! I always tell people this is my #1 workout! It’s amazing because it’s not just abs, so many great upper/lower body moves built into it.

      • I can see my waist again! says:

I love it. I have a love hate relationship with Level 3. I hate doing it but love the results. Lol. My abs are now lifted and on its way to looking as perky as when I was a teenager.

  • Autumn says:

What is your suggestion for best results with losing thigh, but and stomach fat? I have most of her dad’s but have only been faithful with 30ds a few years ago and it was really good.

    • Erica House says:

Unfortunately you can’t spot reduce fat! You can eat better to lose body fat all over, and do specific moves to tone muscle, but you can’t burn fat off of just one area. Just eat healthy and exercise regularly and you’ll start to get tone all over!
