Long Runs, Baseball & My First Kona Kase

This coming Saturday will be my first group long run for marathon training and this month the mileage will vary from 8-11 miles. I wanted to go out with a bang on the last long run I’d do alone so I busted out 12 miles on Saturday – in the pouring rain.

I carry a Ziploc baggy in the pocket of my handheld water bottle to cover my phone with when it rains but apparently that wasn’t good enough this weekend and the speaker on my iPhone no longer works. Oh well! I think the only time I really use it is when I’m doing my plank and need krunk music to keep me going. I felt pretty good post-run but I did eat a ridiculous amount of food that day and woke up with slightly sore legs on Sunday. My biggest challenge for the next few weeks will be getting used to running 5x a week as opposed to the 3x I’ve been doing for months now. I gotta say waking up yesterday knowing that I didn’t have to run felt really, really good.

The endorphin’s from Saturday’s run put me in a pretty good mood the rest of the day. Silly photos ensued.

After I went into a quick coma on the couch I showered and headed downtown to try a food cart/truck I’ve been wanting to check out for a while. A few months ago Pensacola opened up this Al Fresco dining area downtown and one of the spots, the Greenhouse, features smoothies, juices and salads.

I was a bit bummed they didn’t post the menu online. Others have requested it on facebook but they said it changes so often that they were still working on a permanent one. I snapped a quick photo of the menu they had out when I stopped by. I asked the guy working what was popular and went with the fruit & nut salad and lavender lemonade.

2013-07-20 13.35.08The salad came out with blue cheese on it which wasn’t listed on the menu and I’m not a huge fan of but I ate it anyways because I was starving after my run. It actually went really well with the fruit and nuts! The lemonade was perfect – not to sweet and just a tiny hint of lavender. 2013-07-20 13.43.59When I got back to the house I saw my first Kona Kase had been delivered {I was provided a case free to review.} For $15 a month they deliver 8 healthy snacks for you to try. 2013-07-20 14.52.52I loved it as soon as I opened it!2013-07-20 14.53.05I was pleasantly surprised to see that 7 out of the 8 things they sent I’d actually eat. There was some perky jerky in there that I won’t be eating but everything else was healthy, low-sugar foods made from real ingredients. Those two caveman cookies were gone in about 5 minutes – freaking delicious! I split the Pro Bar energy chews with my Dad and he already tried them and said they were tasty. I’m looking forward to adding the enjoy life nut and seed mix to my next salad!

That evening Dad and I went to a Blue Wahoo’s game. We had a group of drunks sitting next to us which were obnoxious and entertaining. I love going to the Saturday games because they put on the best fireworks show every weekend!

Sunday I spent a few hours working and doing my food prep. This weeks menu is pretty freaking phenomenal:

Lunch: Homemade Baked Egg Rolls with Healthy Fried Rice (loosely based on this recipe)

Dinner: Spinach and Artichoke Stuffed Portobellos with Vegetable Medley

    One day very soon you’ll look back on Saturday and think, “Ah, I recall those days where I had to run “just” 12 miles.” haha It’s coming very soon, believe me. I got to a point where my legs were perma-sored. Some days were just less sore than others. It’s alllll worth it though! :)

      Ohhhh it’s painful to even think that I may long for an ‘easy’ 12 mile run soon! I’m pretty sore today after my 4 mile run. I’m going to have to figure out what’s an ‘expected’ level of soreness, and what’s a sign I may need to take it easy for a day.

    I love fresh lemonade and I do like a bit of blue cheese on a salad like that. Good luck with the training program!

      I haven’t had lemonade in ages because it’s usually so full of sugar but I asked how much they added before I ordered and he said it was only about a teaspoon. It definitely wasn’t as syrupy sweet as other lemonades I’ve had and I loved that!

    The closest thing I’ve done to prep for the week ahead is doing laundry! I’m planning on cooking up some veggies today and getting most of my “stuff” ready for the week today – it will require less thinking once the week starts rolling!

      Laundry definitely counts as prep! I spent about 2 hours doing laundry and cleaning the house this weekend as well. I Just have zero time to do any cooking/cleaning during the week.

  • Thanks for the egg roll recipe! I’ve been on the hunt and this looks perfect. Yesterday I got ready for the week by grilling up some chicken and chopping a bunch of veggies so that it only takes a minute to throw a salad together for lunch. Then I made a batch of noodles and veggies with spicy peanut sauce for the 3 nights this week that I’ll be in school and need a portable dinner.

      Ohhhh I love me some thai peanut sauce!
      When I make the egg rolls I add a decent amount more spices than she has. When steaming the coleslaw mix I add a ton of garlic, green onions, soy sauce & ginger. I also dip the rolls in a bit of sweet-and-sour sauce. So good!

    Way to kick off that training plan girl! I loved seeing you out at baseball with pops – how cute!? I need to remember to carry a plastic bag and my phone namely – esp in the darker runs of the early morning – horray for Florida livin’ ;)

      It has seriously rained almost every day here for the last 2 weeks. SO over it. It’s nice because it keeps the temp low but I’m tired of running in soggy shoes!

  • Your food looks delish. I wonder how the egg rolls would taste without soy sauce?

      I’m sure they’d still be fine! I only added 1/2 T to mine so you really can’t even taste it. They are a little bland, but so low calorie I don’t mind and love dipping them in sweet-and-sour!

  • That Kona Kase looks amazing! I love when I get boxes and I actually love 90% of the products inside. :) & frame-able quotes are always an added bonus.
