Moving A.D.D.

January 2nd, 2013 | Posted by Erica House in Life

The New Year started off a bit rocky. My downstairs neighbors kept me up half the night as they were being so loud I could hear them talking, laughing, and listening to crappy music until 2 a.m. when I finally passed out for good. I’ve had issues with them for a while and it’s part of the reason why I’m moving. I woke up and had the sudden urge to listen to Hootie and the Blowfish at 7 a.m. as loud as I could take it. I may have also put my speakers on the floor, facing down, above where I believe their bedrooms to be.

Don’t screw with my sleep.

After I got that out of my system I decided to try to go for an easy run. My knee and left foot have been in pretty bad shape since the 12 miler, but I felt good enough that running seemed like it may help loosen my legs up. Wrong. I got 2 miles done before I made the wise decision to come home and do some ab work instead!

The rest of the day was spent alternating between cleaning, packing, eating and reading. I busted out some of the French textbooks I got at Goodwill for $2 a few years ago and was surprised at how much I remembered. I took 2 years of it in High School and have been trying to at least maintain the basic understanding of the language since I graduated. I’d really, really like to become more proficient in French then move on to Spanish!

Lunch was spectacular. I’m trying really hard to incorporate healthy fats into each meal (along with a balanced ration of carbs and protein). I’ll do a full post on this soon  but as a vegetarian it can be difficult for me to make sure I’m getting adequate calories from protein and fats. This was the best 350 calories I’ve had in quite some time!

The afternoon was spent trying to stay on task and pack. I’m usually so focused but when it comes to moving I’ll spend about 10 minutes packing or cleaning one area of the house, then get totally sidetracked and start working on something completely different. Please tell me I’m not the only one to do this! At least I had a great packing helper!

The house is definitely starting to look like I’m moving in 2 days. I’m usually uber anal about keeping everything clean and organized so it’s taking some active effort on my part to remember this is just temporary chaos, and come Friday night I’ll be totally unpacked and enjoying my new place.

I’m hoping that we have sunnier skies tomorrow so I can take photos of a recipe I’ve been trying to post on here all week. I’m also going to have my Polar Heart Rate monitor review up soon as well as a special offer for you all for the delicious About Time protein drinks you keep seeing me with!

Before I turn into a total stressed out  nut job, please share your best moving tips with me!

Keep things labeled and organized. I think that’s why I love unpacking more than packing :)

Same here! I’ve told everyone that my entire place will be unpacked and set up in 24 hours. No one believes me, but I’ll post pics to my Twitter Friday night to prove it!

In my experience, shorter moves are harder than long distance moves. The hardest move I ever made was within the same building because I mentally didn’t prepare. Pretend you are moving to Alaska and label everything. Move from the back of the apartment first, and close doors to rooms that have been emptied. Like you are “painting ” yourself out of the place … and load in the same way.
Keep your chin up! You will be so happy when you are done.

Ugh – you know that’s exactly where my mind is at right now! I’m kind of half assing it since it’s a local move and I’m sure I’ll regret it. I’m determined to get it all together today as I sign the least and start moving tomorrow at 9 a.m.! Love you idea of moving back to front and closing off areas – I need that mentally to help me stay focused!

  • Ohhh I love about time protein powder! I’ve never tried peaches and cream though! I’m sipping on the birthday cake with some almond milk and cinnamon!

Uhg moving is no fun no matter what!! Whenever I try to organize things I find stuff that I haven’t seen in forever and then I get all distracted playing with it! I have ADD 100%- you are not alone!

  • I am terrible at packing and organizing for a move, but I love unpacking for some reason! Good luck with your move!

  • I am the worst packer/unpacker. I get tired/bored with whatever I’m currently packing so I’ll move to a different area for a while then to another and so on. I never finish one room at a time.

I’m so happy you checked my blog out! If I may suggest my favorite recipes to start with would be the Spinach Lentil Soup & Roasted Cauliflower and Tahini salad. I make them at least once a week!

In a similar situation except I’m moving a province away so I have to prioritize how much I can cram into my little car for the 20 hour drive. Lists, lists, and lists. That’s what keeps me sane through every move.

You’re so gorgeous and such a fitness inspiration! But I’m wondering why you try to eat SO low cal considering how in shape/muscular/ active/lean you are? Too much restriction on fats and things are bad?

    • Erica House says:

Ty for the compliment! I don’t particularly try to eat low calorie – I eat about 1600-2000 a day depending on how much I’m working out. The only thing I have a problem with is getting enough healthy fats. I eat a good balance of carbs and protein but I have to make an effort to ensure I’m getting good fats through nuts, peanut butter and such!

  • I LOVE unpacking things, because it’s a fresh slate…putting your stuff in places you know they belong/would like them to be…so refreshing. (PS: SO glad I’m not living in an apt. anymore. My husband and I hated that part of it. We were on the bottom floor and found out one night that someone was on our patio using our furniture to get onto the balcony above us…to break in! (The people that then moved in later seemed to have been building their own furniture. lol Always hammering. And her 13 year old son removed my delicate wash and hung them from all the pipes in the room. How fun!)

12-miler??? I need to catch up!!! Happy New Year, friend. <3

Your neighbors sound a lot like my current ones lol. I’ve come to realize that I’m just going to have to make 2013 the year of practicing patience with my neighbors as I have no deasire to buy/rent a house and no matter how ‘perfect’ the place seems you always run a risk with who you’ll be living around!

The 12 miler was epic. I started running longer distances in the last 6 weeks getting ready for my first half marathon on the 26th!

  • So happy I found your blog! Your lunch looks great:) I Love those healthy fats!

  • I totally do the same thing – work on something for 10 minutes and then get totally completed distracted by something else. And not just with packing – it feels like with everything these days! As you can probably imagine, I’m not the most efficient person right now. I wish that I could offer up some packing tips but definitely label boxes and keeps lists. That makes it at least a little bit easier when you’re unpacking.

It’s just so strange to me since I’m so anal about being organized with everything in my every day life – and suddenly I’m acting like some cranky 13 year old who doesn’t want to clean her room!
