Pensacola ‘snow’ & weekend shenanigans

January 27th, 2014 | Posted by Erica House in Fitness | Health | Life

My weekend officially started Thursday night when a friend invited me to go see Oleanna. Despite having many friends who are involved in our local theater community I do not go to performances nearly as much as I’d like to. I’m glad I went to this one as it was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen! I had no idea what it was about when he asked me to go, but it ended up focusing on a professor and student who have both been negatively impacted by the education system. Extremely engaging dialogue and the actors were phenomenal (not at all biased since one is a friend of mine!)

playFriday morning I woke up to utter chaos on my facebook feed. It was snowing in Pensacola.

By snow, I mean ice/sleet, but the closest we’ve seen here in over 10 years.  2014-01-24 11.29.43

It really didn’t seem all that cold to me out, but I’m sure that’s thanks to my recent trip to Chicago. You really can’t call 30-something degrees freezing when you’ve actually been in freezing, single digit, temperatures.

That afternoon I worked from Panera and grabbed lunch at Fresh Market. I’m trying to curb my sushi/Kombucha habit since it can get so expensive but it’s just so damn good! #WeAllHaveOurVices
2014-01-24 12.55.22Saturday morning I woke up and did not feel like running. At all. It was cold and dreary out and the thought of running outside made me want to never leave my bed. I asked my Twitter family to give me some encouragement and they delivered! I hopped in my car and headed to the gym to do my 8 miles on the treadmill. Horrible idea (although running in the warm weather and watching the news was nice.) My legs were killing me on Sunday. I didn’t think running on the treadmill would be that different from running outside. 2014-01-25 09.13.26After the gym I picked up some groceries for the week. Those Late July chips were gone by the end of the day. Going to make the Udi’s pizza this week. Haven’t tried it before so I hope it’s good!2014-01-25 12.55.58That night I met up with some friends downtown. One of which I hadn’t seen in almost 4 years, and another who I haven’t seen in a year (we’ve developed this pattern of hanging out once a year for the last few years. Last time it was before the double bridge run, which is what I’ll be running next weekend!) It was great to catch up with everyone, see a few other friends out, and go to some places I hadn’t been to in ages (like Seville.)  The guys I was hanging out with are friends with the owner of Mimi’s Bistro on the go who I got to meet. It was bizarre since I just read about him in the news earlier that week thanks to this big food truck fight our city has going on. 2014-01-25 20.19.41I stuck to my two glass of wine max but did partake in a shot and I’m pretty sure that’s what put me over the edge. I just do not handle liquor well! I spent most of Sunday morning on the couch napping, watching tv, and eating garbage food. I finally forced myself to clean the house, food prep, and go outside for a walk. I’m so glad I did as it was absolutely gorgeous out!

I loved Oleanna but Im a huge theater nerd.
    this week?
    my goal?
no pee accidents by the puppy :-0 im setting the bar low.

  • Looks like a great weekend! As a Canadian your snowflakes make me chuckle a little bit. And they also make me long for warmer weather! It has been ridiculous here in Toronto! One of the coldest winters we have had in years. And I am SOOOOOO over it@

    • Erica House says:

Lol – I can’t even call them snowflakes. It was definitely just sleet. It was amazing to see how people started to freak out over them. Apparently more snow is on the agenda for tomorrow night. Since we don’t see it often it is pretty amazing, but after 3 days in Chicago I realized I could never live in truly cold climates!

You had a great weekend! :) I’m looking forward to seeing how the flooring project goes this week. And praying the home building gods continue to cut us some slack.

Those photos are gorgeous. I wanna see sun..sand…a beach! We also had “wintery weather” and warnings. Joy. Funny, we have food truck debacles here right now, too! Imagine that.

My weekend…I forced myself to go to a wedding that was actually pretty fun. I haven’t seen the bride in about eight months. We used to get ready for work in the gym locker room every morning, and I guess she likes me enough to invite me to her wedding and occasionally have lunch :)

Sunday I went to a Pitbull Appreciation and Adoption event at a local pet store. I volunteered with my group and played with a puppy :) and stayed away from the big scary dogs. Poor things, I’d hate to be in a kennel :-/

I have a massage Saturday, so I am looking forward to that. Funny you mention things to look forward to. I used to always “schedule” life to have things to look forward to, like a trip in March, another in July, a wedding in August, etc., but I haven’t done that in about five years…and I just agreed to go to a concert (Katy Perry..hahaha) in October and a cruise wedding in September. Now, to fill up the months in between with fun things!! I miss my old self…I am glad she is reappearing (albeit very slowly).

    • Erica House says:

I’m definitely siding with the food truck owners! The only people who have an issue with them are the people who own restaurants downtown and are pissy it’s taking business away from them. GOOD THING WE LIVE IN AMERICA.

Weddings & Pitbull activities sounds fun! I saw all of your pitbull photos on instagram. I wish I had the control necessary to volunteer at the animal shelter here. I’d just end up taking home all the cats. Every effing one of them.

I’m big on scheduling fun stuff to look forward to. The mundane 9-5 life is so much more tolerable when you have trips coming up. This is the first time in years I haven’t had something set in stone t look forward to. Well, that’s just gonna have to change!

Looking forward to having some days off and getting my life even more simplified by going through the nooks and crannies of our apartment.

    • Erica House says:

I have quite a few areas of my house that I keep meaning to go back and reorganize now that I’m officially settled in, but they are hiding behind closet doors so I just keep ignoring them :)

  • Helen says:

Looks like you had a great weekend, Erica. =) And, wow. Snow! It hasn’t rained here in California for a long time (in a drought). We might finally get rain on Wednesday!

As for running, I’ve been running on the treadmill and it gets boring. I like running outside better, where you can see a change in scenery.

    • Erica House says:

I’m a huge advocate of running outdoors (as long as it’s safe!) because I think the fresh air/sun on my face helps my mood as much as the actual running. I hope I don’t have to take it to the treadmill again anytime soon!

My whole weekend was productive, meaning that we worked harder than like, actual work day stuff. Add in a costco run and food prep. Last night, my best friend reminded me that I volunteered to make capes and other various props for the super hero day for a free after school program.

A small success was weeding out the clothes that I never wear. I can actually stick to my half of the closet now.

    • Erica House says:

Well, productive is good! Maybe not fun, but it can feel nice :) I need to purge my closet again. I have a ton of space, but I just don’t wear 75% of my clothes and it’s pointless to have in there when others may be able to benefit from them.

  • Beautiful pictures! We had a military ball on Friday night, and though I only had a few glasses of wine (okay, and a vodka and diet pepsi…weird combo, I know) I was SO tired and just felt blah the next day. Needless to say, I didn’t get much done, but it was kinda nice :) I’ll be job searching, trying new recipes, finding things to organize in the house, and working on a craft, haha. Nothing too exciting ;) Have a wonderful day!

    • Erica House says:

My lazy Sunday would have been much more enjoyable had I been able to stand up for more than a few minutes without getting dizzy! I need to either never drink again or start to build up a tolerance lol. Good luck with the job search!

While I haven’t seen Oleanna, David Mamet dialogue (c.f. Glengarry Glen Ross) is the standard by which dialogue should be measured.

  • Snow? In Florida? Holy heck. I think the Bay Area would lose it’s mind if it snowed here. Snowmageddon was supposed to happen in San Francisco… but I don’t think it happened :) Hell, we’d take whatever form of liquid we can get whether rain, hail or snow. We are being warned of MEGADROUGHT. eeeps.
I don’t respond well to alcohol anymore either. 2 glasses of drink is what I can handle (barely). Glad you managed to to be productive though. And beautiful photos!

  • Caitlin says:

What a beautiful weekend – look at that sunshine!! So missing the FL weather in my CT tundra up here! Even if it’s cold down there I’m sure it’ll warm up a bit in no time while I am gonna be waiting til March, I swear!
Two glasses of wine and a shot would leave me feeling blah too, for some reason I swear I could drink a shot in a cocktail and it’d affect me less than a shot straight up does, I think it’s something about the speed with which I drink it (more time to take sips of water while sipping a cocktail). At least you went out and had some fun, mmm vino.
I love seeing grocery hauls. Love the frozen pizza, healthier frozen pizzas are so fun to doctor up with extra veg and/or protein. Oh and baby cabbages? Gimme!

    • Erica House says:

I always moan that we don’t get a ‘real’ winter down here but I can only take about 3 days of it being below 40 degrees before I start to go stir-crazy!
I think you are right about drinking shots in a cocktail being easier to moderate, shots on their own are 99% of the time a bad idea. Sometimes, I just like making bad decisions :)

  • Lucky you for the weather you got this weekend! I am SO tired of snow down here. I was just looking through your blog, and I see that you are in the psychology field! So am I! I do research on food marketing to children and how that contributes to obesity. You have quite the story – congrats on your fitness journey and I’m glad I found your blog!

    • Erica House says:

OMG. Your field of research sounds extremely interesting to me! Who do you work for? I’ve always been fascinated by consumer psychology. I was working at a hospital last year doing clinical research but I haven’t done any in the field of psych since I was in grad school many moons ago.

      • I work with several different researchers in the Connecticut area, kind of close to NYC! I kind of stumbled into the field of social/consumer psychology, but I find it fascinating as well! Teaching has always struck me as being incredibly difficult, so kudos to you for doing it and doing it well!
