Q & A with Travis {the Boyfriend}

August 4th, 2014 | Posted by Erica House in Life

Ever since I started dating Travis a few months ago I have had quite a few people ask about him! The usual; how we met, what does he do, etc. So, I thought it would be fun to do a little Q&A about (and with) him today.

1. How did you two meet?
Online! Yes, I’ve done the online dating thing and actually had really good luck with it. I tried it out a few years ago and have done it on and off since then (much to my mothers constant worry.) I’ve always told people I found better quality guys online, since you can weed them out a bit, then I ever did in person. I took almost all of 2013 off from dating but decided it was time to try again. I don’t get out much in Pensacola and Travis is stationed in middle-of-nowhere Alabama right now so we both happened to be on Plenty of Fish. My search window was about 25 miles so I would have never come across his profile. Fortunately, distance was no object to him and in early May I received a message from a cute guy who had cat tattoo’s, and the rest is history!

2. What it’s like dating a carnivore?
As a self-proclaimed health nut I always wondered what it would be like dating someone who wasn’t interested in working out or eating healthy. I lucked out because Travis is very active and loves to eat healthy. We both food prep on the weekends and whenever I cook I look for recipes that can be easily modified by adding chicken or beef in the end. I’m still working on him warming up to the idea of eating more meals that don’t include meat!

3. How do you like having a long distance relationship?
It sucks. Seriously. We have it WAY better than some couples (he is only 2.5 hours away) but it’s still rough! For our first date he came down and we met at Bagelheads around 10:30 a.m. and he didn’t end up leaving town until about 8 p.m. that night. Longest first date ever, and I’ve never had someone drive 5 hours roundtrip for one date!

Questions for Travis (I emailed these to him and these are his responses. He can be a man of few words.)

1. What do you do?
I have been an active member of the US Army for almost 5 years now, currently being paid as a Warrant Officer learning to fly helicopters for a living. Such an unbelievable experience!

2. What’s with the tattoos?
I like and have a few of them. {Erica’s note: this is an understatement as most of you can see he has quite a few! I was hoping he would elaborate on them but in essence he has random 80’s movie tattoo’s, cat tattoo’s and super mario brothers. It’s pretty sweet.}

3. How do you put up with Erica?
Oh dear. This is a tough one. I would say keeping the lanes of communication open. I think that is key for any relationship to survive. There really hasn’t been too much to put up with. Pretty sure she is just trying to get me to spill the beans with these questions.

4. How long have you been running? What’s your training like?
I have been running off and on for about 5 years now. Never had too much of an interest in cardio before joining the military. Never had too much of an interest in running over 4 miles before meeting Erica! ha… {Yes, his shirt says ‘Running Sucks’}

5. What’s one thing about you that most people don’t know?
I’m a pilot with a fear of heights.

  • Very sweet :) no online dating for me but it’s crazy how so many people are meeting that way now! I can completely see how it takes a lot of guess work out of the equation though! Happy for you guys!

  • Aww, I love this! I’ve never tried online dating but I think it’d be great to be able to weed guys out too, haha. I met my husband in person at work, then creeped him on Facebook. I thought he was smokin and just went balls out and sent him a message- something I had never done before (and was quite embarrassed about for a while, but it’s funny now). We did the long distance thing for 11 months (July 2011-June 2012) while he was at OCS at Fort Benning, GA then BOLC at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He recently deployed so now it’s 9 months of long distance with minimal contact…wahhhh :( but that’s military life! SO happy to see that Travis is in the army!!!!

    • Erica House says:

Lol – I’ve done my fair share of facebook creepin! I still don’t understand how military wives can go 9-12+ months with their husbands overseas. I know people do it all the time, I’m just in total denial about it possibly happening still.

  • Genna says:

yay!! This is super cute! I met my fiance online :) It works great!

  • Linz says:

jonny and i met online too :) and now we’ve been married for almost four years!

  • Katrina says:

He sounds like an awesome guy! Technically we chatted on Facebook before we did in person!

    • Erica House says:

Didn’t the version of the story I hear involve someone being hit on while working out at a gym? (And HOW appropriate is that for you two fitness freaks!)

  • Cassie says:

SO CUTE! I’m in a LDR (Pittsburgh-Portland, OR) soooo that sucks. Obviously we both know it won’t be forever, we are both super independent and like our alone time and try not to go more than a few weeks without seeing each other. We talk all the time and Facetime sometimes, so that helps. I don’t think either of us have ever worried about trusting the other for a second so I think that is probably why it works.

    • Erica House says:

I always joked that I’d be perfect for a LDR since I’m so busy running/working/blogging M-F. I’d love to see Travis more during the week but a weekend only BF isn’t the worst thing to have!

I met my husband on AOL back in 1999 when chat rooms were the craze. I was 15 at the time. We dated for a few years during high school and then took a few years off. Got back together in 2003 and married in 2007. I had met several guys on-line. I wish you the best. You both seem too cute together!!!

    • Erica House says:

Oh man I remember the AOL chatroom days! My SN was something involving Sailor Moon :) That’s so cute that you guys ended up together in the end!

  • Cassandra says:

Thanks for sharing this! I’ve been on the fence about trying online dating again (did it once; had a great date with a guy who later ditched me prior to the second date because he “wanted to get in a yoga class”) but you’ve encouraged me towards trying it again! Is there a reason you prefer Plenty of Fish over other dating sites?

    • Erica House says:

Trust me – dating disasters can happen regardless of where/how you meet the person! I liked POF because it was free and seemed to have way more people on there then some of the other sites. A good friend of mine met her current BF on there as well.

  • mel says:

Met my guy on twitter , over 3 years later here we are!

  • My husband and I started dating sophomore year of high school, so I never did the online thing. We were at different colleges for a couple of years though so I can relate to the distance. It’s tough, but worth it when you know you’ve found the one!

    • Erica House says:

It’s well worth it! My parents did LD when my Dad went away to college and she was still in high school. 30 years later they are still going strong!

  • I met my boyfriend through mutual friends (we are both from the same state) and the first few months of our relationship was on FB chat. We started out 380 miles apart — it sucked big time. Now we live in the same apartment complex, on the way to buying a house together next year, and I couldn’t be happier. Distance definitely works out sometimes.

    • Erica House says:

That’s adorable that you guys live in the same apartment complex! I LOVE living alone, but I still feel like I do when I’m with Travis at his place since I work from home and he’s always working/studying. Good luck buying a house!

  • I love this! You two are so cute together! And omg that picture of him and Salem! haha

  • Christina says:

Thanks for sharing! You look so happy! I met my (now husband) online, and we’ve been married almost five years, and we have a 2 year old little girl. I don’t think online dating is the answer for everyone, but it worked well for us :)

Question for you (and Travis) – how do you plan to handle the distance once the fall semester starts? With 5 classes it sounds like you’ll be super busy!

    • Erica House says:

Ugh. I will be super busy! The one perk about living so far apart is that we can’t be distracted by each other, even if we wanted to, during the week. So, I power through M-F and we see each other on the weekends. If I stay on top of things I can get all my work done before Saturday rolls around so we can have time to actually relax and do nothing. It is going to be a very hectic few months for sure!

  • SuzLyfe says:

You guys are adorable. The Chucky tattoo, no; you guys, yes.

  • Me and my husband dated long distance for 3 years before getting married. We met through friends at a wedding. He lived in NYC and I was in Toronto, Canada. Now we are both in NYC!

  • Oh my goodness, how very sweet! You two look great together :) Thanks for sharing a little 411 on your man!

  • Caroline says:

This is awesome! Big advocate of online dating, met my fiancé online! :D

  • Jenny says:

You guys are so cute I can’t take it. :-) LOVE the last picture. Its my favorite!

  • Krista says:

Yay! Ya’all are cute together! And that picture of Travis & Salem…HA!!! :)

I did online dating off-and-on for 10 years (man oh man, did I have some *interesting* dating stories!) before finally calling quits on dating entirely.

  • Helen says:

I’m just so happy for you two. =) You guys look so cute together.

  • Erin M. says:

I’m so happy for you! You look so great together! I’m floundering between wanting to get back into dating and just not wanting anything to do with relationships for the rest of my life. My ex boyfriend of 6 years and I broke up about 10 months ago and it’s been the hardest 10 months of my life. It freaking sucks. Of course he’s moved on and I’m just stuck. I don’t know if I could ever do online dating. Were you scared at first?

    • Erica House says:

Ugh – I hate hearing that. Every guy I dated before Travis ended things saying they didn’t have time to be in a relationship and within a few weeks they were dating someone else. Screw that! I know it may not seem like it now, but everything happens for a reason and it sounds like this guy wasn’t good enough for you!

  • Domi says:

Yall are adorable, and this was such a fun post idea! I’m actually testing the online dating waters right now. So far, I’m really turned off by it (mostly the quality of people I’m getting “matched” with), but stories like this give me hope that maybe there are some good ones on there…even if few and far between. ;)

  • You and Travis are so cute together!!
I’m slowly working up the courage to maybe online date. Never have I actually “dated” met my ex-husband at 17 so the dating thing never really happened.
Sometimes I just want to stay home with the cat, you know? ;)

  • Danielle says:

This is so cute! And a cat tattoo? Perfect. haha.
