Stuck in a Food Rut

As a personal trainer I know it’s important to incorporate a wide variety of food in your diet to ensure all dietary requirements are met.

However, I’m not perfect, and my diet has been far from it lately!

There’s a part of my personality that really likes routine. Really, really likes routine. I wake up at the same time every day (5 a.m. – even on the weekends), I eat at the same time every day and I’ll go weeks (sometimes months) eating the same types of meals every day. Here’s a run down of how my diet has looked lately:

5 a.m.  1/2 cup of oatmeal with brown sugar and syrup.

9:30 a.m. Fudge Graham Zone Bar.

 12 p.m. Toast with peanut butter and an apple with cinnamon + Stevia (sugar)

2 p.m. Snack. Usually a handful of chips, some scrambled egg whites or some other 200 calorie option.

5:30 p.m. Giant bowl of steamed broccoli with nutritional yeast, lemon juice, garlic salt and a bit of lowfat mayo + 1 Veggie Egg roll

7 p.m. Snack. I’ve been killing these Publix brand popsicles ever since I got a cold a few weeks ago. I’ve also been making popcorn a lot lately. It used to be a bit of yogurt with granola. Whatever it is I keep it to 100-200 calories.

So, that’s what goes in my tummy every day. Daily calories hover around 1400 (more if I had a longer workout) and all the basic fruit + veggies + protein requirements are met. It’s so hard to break away from things that are just so easy and quick to make. However, I’m going to challenge myself next week to start changing it up some. I used to make amazing salads and wraps for lunch and I’ve been really missing quinoa lately. Also, I have a ton of recipes on my Pinterest list to make that I should start working on!

Please tell me I’m not the only one who gets in food ruts. What do you eat on a regular/daily basis?

  • Omg I’m the same way! I have like five different meal options I pick between for breakfast lunch and dinner during the week. I am a habitual eater, I always order the same things at my favorite restaurants, etc. The one thing eating the same every day during the week does is make me want variety on the weekends. I like to go out to restaurants or pick up meals at the grocery store, something to give me different options. Salem is so cute, btw!

      Salems looks are quite deceiving lol – he can be vicious! I had no idea others were as routine with their food as I am. I feel way less weird now!

    I also get stuck in food ruts. I’m big on meal planning, but often find myself rotating the same dishes over and over. One of my current goals is to try at least one new recipe every week. I’ll send any good ones your way :)

      That would be great! Matt and I try to make at least one new meal on the weekends but that doesn’t help my work week food rut any. Glad you liked the kitty pics :)

    I get myself into regular food ruts. Most of this week I had a pbj for lunch with an apple, some cheese, and a few chips. The only time I had anything different was the last two days when I had yogurt. I rarely even buy anything new to try. It makes shopping easier when you buy the same stuff every week.

      It does make shopping and meal planning way easy! I used to have a list made up on the fridge of quick meal ideas I could go to when I was feeling uninspired. I should try doing that again!

  • I have some staples that I eat every weekday: oatmeal, yogurt, veggies, and a fruit or two. Then my lunches and dinners I have to switch up. I get bored of the same lunches and well, I just LOVE cooking dinner. Weekends aren’t structured and I have what I feel like.

      I wish I had your zest for cooking! I get inspired one or two nights a week to cook but that’s about all the energy I can muster up!

  • I do get into food ruts a lot. Whenever Im in them, I try to spice it up by adding in a new food or recipe, that way I can kind of kick start myself back into gear!
    BTW, your cat literally takes up your entire body! Thats a fluffly kitty lol

      Lol – he does weight 16 pounds and has ridiculously long fluffy hair so he looks way bigger than he already is. I keep meaning to put him on an exercise regimen :)

  • Oy vay.. I always eat the same stuff! I think its lack of creativity. I go out at lunch on Mondays as buy stuff for wraps for the rest of the week – but its always the same stuff. If I’m home I make something and quinoa, or I pick up a burrito ‘salad’ at a place near my house. And I eat scrambled eggs with ham and spinach every morning!

    The big bowl of Broccli sounds good – whats this nutrional yeast you speak of? What else would be a good thing to pair it with either than a spring roll?

      Here is a link to my favorite brand of nutritional yeast with some FAQ’s on it:

      Basically, it’s an amazing source of B-vitamins that vegetarians often lack and a good source of protein. It has a slight cheesy flavor to it so many people will use it on things that go well with cheese/cheddar taste (broccoli, eggs, mashed potatoes, pasta…).

      I’ll pair a bowl of steamed broccoli with almost anything. Last night I had it with a small bowl of mushroom ravioli. My other favorite pairing is with some brown rice!

    I eat the same thing pretty much daily. I know I’m supposed to mix it up- and lunches do get mixed up sometimes- but every morning it’s whole grain toast, peanut butter, yogurt, and fruit. It’s just so much easier to throw it in my lunch bag and head to work. Making new dishes every day requires too much effort. lol.

  • I’ve eaten pretty much the same exact thing every day for the past couple of years. Dinner changes all the time, but I always bring the same things with me to work. I’m still not bored of it either.
    I love the cat photo shoot. Those pictures are adorable. :)

      My coworkers used to give me such a hard time over always bringing the same lunch. I was definitely the only person in the office who did so and I’m loving the fact that I now see I’m not the only one (by far)!
