The Weekend

May 5th, 2014 | Posted by Erica House in Life

My house is almost back to normal after being out of town last weekend for the Nashville marathon and then the great Pensacola flood happening Tuesday/Wednesday. Unsurprisingly, between the emotional and physical stress of those events I woke up Friday with a sore throat. I skipped my workout and headed to the library to pick up some supplies to keep me occupied while I parked it on the couch all day. My immune system was weakened after running a marathon so I think the flood, bacteria that likely washed into my house (I’ve bleached all the floors since!) and zero sleep just pushed my body over the edge.

While browsing the library’s running books I came across this gem.

2014-05-02 11.00.16I picked up a few books I’ve been meaning to read for a while, and some DVD’s. I had never heard of Vamps but it just came out a few years ago and stars Alicia Silverstone and it’s by the same director as Clueless. Anyone seen it?

2014-05-02 11.15.12When I got out to my car I found this little guy on the door. He’s not the first snail I’ve seen in there post-flood. I still haven’t heard back from the insurance people, and my car is still wet. It also smells – terribly. 2014-05-02 11.13.14Last week I gave myself a challenge for the month of may: Spend no more than $50 a week on all groceries/non-essentials. Well, I was doing pretty good until the flood and I ran to the store twice after that. I’m up to $70 and most of my overage definitely wasn’t essential (sushi, this bag of Late July chips, and a case of La Croix.) I was just tired, stressed, and used my hell week as an excuse. There were a few times I was really tempted to ‘stop in real quick’ but didn’t – so even though I went over I still consider the week a success. 2014-05-01 16.38.50Saturday morning my friend Christina came over and we went out for a 7 mile run. She’s training unofficially for her first half marathon now and a full in January. This was her longest run yet! I paced her and we came in at exactly 12 min mile pace. The weather was gorgeous and I felt pretty good given it was my second run since the marathon.

Immediately after breakfast I ran over to fort walton for a bit to do laundry and hang out at my parents house. I also ate all of their food. Dad said it was cheating on my ‘$50 a week rule’ and told me I’d have to make sure you guys all knew about it. So, I had some chips, cereal, PB & chocolate chips, and ice cream. BAM. That’s the price you pay for bringing me into the world, Pops!

When I got back into town I headed over to Christina’s for some pool time. I professed my undying love to her dog, Toby, and we laid out for about an hour.
2014-05-03 15.36.19While we were there some guy was playing his guitar and singing ‘More Than Words’ by Extreme. I actually thought we were back in the 90’s for a second.2014-05-03 16.12.15Sunday morning I woke up with obscene energy. I did 30 minutes of strength before breakfast (Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30) and I realized how much strength I’ve lost over the last few weeks. I kept up with strength training much better with this marathon than my first, but I haven’t picked up the weights in almost two weeks. I was panting on Level 2! After breakfast I worked on blog/school stuff for a few hours, and decided to go for a run before lunch.
2014-05-04 10.34.38I’m dying to get to work on some speed training (gunning for a sub 25 minute 5k) but I’m also trying to wait to make sure my body is all healed up from the marathon. I went for the run around 10 a.m. and immediately realized it’s gotten to the point where it’s to hot to run past 7 a.m. here.
2014-05-04 10.38.16I have this week off before the semester starts and I’ve got a mile long ‘to do’ list of things I need to get done for the three classes I’m teaching, and some blog stuff I need to catch up on. My little blog baby is 2 years old this month! I think I will celebrate by doing a bit of redesigning.

If you blog, how often do you change your layout?

Does it feel like Summer yet where you are?

  • Glad things are looking up! Love that you ate your parents food- I do the same to mine when I go home ;) It’s definitely summer here in West Texas- 80s and 90s lately. However, there is no humidity so definitely not as bad as Florida or the Midwest.

how hath I no idea what that is?!

  • Toby is adorable! I love Late July chips. And I’ve changed my blog layout twice now after blogging for three years.

I spent a while yesterday playing around with the free layouts on WordPress but I definitely need to pony up some money and get a professional one. Just got to wait until my ‘no money may’ is over!

I feel you on the strength training! I just finished my first marathon and just did not have the energy to strength train when I go to the longer mileage at the end. I haven’t strength trained for real in probably a month. Ripped in 30 is such a great place to start though. I’ll have to whip that out soon!

It was a good choice – baby steps! I’m used to doing 45-60 minute workouts at home and that 30 minute routine was rough!

  • Definitely does not feel like summer yet… I really want to start focusing more on speed work too!! I just redesigned my blog last month, but it’s only 8 months old this week :)

I said it before, but I’m saying it again. I WANT that puppy!!!!!!!!! <3

  • Aw man! You make me wanna go chill by the pool ALL DAY LONG, the sky looks so blue and peaceful! Sorry to hear you weren’t feeling the best and that flood situation is horrific! I am sorry about that as well :(

I haven’t been to the library in EONS! I don’t even know where the library in LA is! :o

  • I love Born to Run! Nice that you’re finally reading it. You’ll love it!
Need to get to the pool asap myself. I was sick last week, so trying to get back into my tri training this week.
Sucks about the flood! I hope you can get things back to normal soon.

It definitely does NOT feel like summer here in Ohio. It barely even feels like spring! It’s supposed to warm up a bit this week though, I think. Hope you can get things straightened out with your car, that has to be so frustrating waiting for an answer.

  • Wait, I’m supposed to strength train? Haha. I’m awful.
And summer? What’s that. We got snow here over the weekend and I am just so over it.

Erica, I know you shop at Publix a lot (so do I), but did you know that Walmart now gives you Publix BOGO’s at the Walmart price? As much as I detest Walmart, I’m saving a ton of money by getting my BOGO’s there! You don’t even have to have the Publix ad with you, just tell the cashier and they will get the Publix ad and check it.

SALT SUGAR FAT is an amazing read. It actually started my food journey because I was both amazed and appalled by the info. I’m in the process now of finding a book or two to take on my long flight out to Seattle. I’m getting Pandora’s Lunchbox, but now I want a fluffy non-health related book while I go over my crisis internship stuff.

    • Erica House says:

I can’t wait to start that one! I’m halfway through ‘It Starts with Food’, and about 1/3 into the running one. I’ll also have to give the health books a break after this as it spins my whole world upside down and now I want to go on a uber health kick again.

      • Jess says:

Having a similar issue. Like I said, I picked up Pandora’s Lunchbox and put Omnivore’s Dilemma on my Kindle for the flight, but I also made sure to get some fluffy non-thinking fiction. I feel like I won’t be able to handle a hard-hitting anything since my brain is just now coming back after finals!
