This Weekend I Decided to Give Extra to Travis

It has been a heck of a Fall semester.

I know I have been alluding on the blog in the last few weeks to the amount of stress I have been under, but I don’t think anyone in the world really understands the gravity of it more so than Travis. Working full-time, marathon training, the blog, maintaining a long distance relationships, and a few other bumps along the way have made me more stressed than I’ve ever been in my entire life. Thankfully, it has started to subside and I’m feeling so much better again. I don’t know if I could have made it, sanity intact, if it wasn’t for Travis.

Give ExtraSo what did I include in my “Give Extra” basket to Travis?

  • Home Improvement; because he’s improved my life so much
  • Dark chocolate espresso trail mix (that I ate 1/4 of before he even tried it); because he’s always so sweet to me
  • My homemade aromatherapy muscle soak; because he helps me to relax
  • Extra Gum; for all the little ‘extras’ that he’s done

When thinking of all the things he’s done for me in the past few months a few memories popped into mind.

I’d been looking forward to Family Day at his base for weeks and was BEYOND bummed when he found out THREE days before the event that they were moving it from Friday to Thursday! I have classes Thursday so there was no way I was going to make it. Family Day is a time where you get to see the soldiers fly around, tour some of the facilities, and get to meet everyone. Well, Travis made the weekend better than family day when he surprised us (his family was in town as well) with chartering a helicopter to fly us around in!

HelicopterJust recently on our engagement photo shoot half of the shoot took place outside and it was raining the entire time. Travis was a trooper and not only held the umbrella for me but also picked me up and carried me around half the time because my heels were getting stuck in the wet sand.

Engagement dayWhen I went to Savannah GA in June for Fitbloggin I came home Sunday afternoon to find Travis waiting for me (we hadn’t planned on seeing each other.) He knew how much I liked to food prep for the week and I mentioned via text while I was in GA that I was bummed I wouldn’t have any time to do so when I got back. So, he found a recent post I did sharing picnic-perfect recipes and made me this incredible napa cabbage salad, fruit salad, and pink lemonade. The man who hardly cooked anything before aside from chicken & rice actually went to multiple stores to find napa cabbage, sliced almonds himself (and was pissed when I told him you could buy them pre-sliced lol), spent a small fortune on spices since he had nothing at home, and looked all over town for a picnic basket to put everything in without ever finding one. Looking back this was about the time I knew he was a keeper.

PicnicWhile the little basket I came up with PALES in comparison to all he’s done for me I hope he knows how much I value him and appreciate everything he’s done for me (on top of being in flight school himself which is about as stressful & time consuming as med school!) With Thanksgiving coming up it’s the perfect time to take a minute to thank whoever is in your life for all the little extra they do for you.

As if this post couldn’t get any more sappy; here’s a video.

Who’s the person who has helped you out the most recently?
Have you thanked them yet for it?

Love the thoughtful basket!! And that the stress is subsiding! <3

  • The little things sometimes show the most love!

I certainly hope so! It’s hard to show him how appreciative I am when we live 150 miles apart. In a few weeks that will all change!

I”ve heard of these baskets–I think they might be a good way to go for some of my family members. Alex gets the star treatment ALL the time so he can deal ;)

  • I am just so incredibly happy for you – so lemme answer your questions – of course, it is my person Kate is who is always my constant support system – much like Travis. We are lucky ladies to have our special people.

  • Such a sweet gift, you two are perfect together!

You guys are seriously the sweetest thing ever. I got cavities just from reading this. :)

My boyfriend has given me a lot of support during the past few months of me preparing to switch careers. Support not only includes sweet gestures, but also reality checks, which I need sometimes. He’s been amazing.

I’m glad your stressful period is ceasing and hope you guys have an awesome wedding (and some time off, dang it!).

    • Erica House says:

Lol – thanks :) Trust me, we aren’t always sickeningly sweet! He’s got a lot to put up with in me ;)

Travis is great at giving reality checks! Guys are just so much more direct than woman usually and sometimes that’s exactly what we need.

I loved this post! I think sometimes we all need to remember to be thankful for good people in our lives. My boyfriend is sincerely a great guy and sometimes I think I need to remind myself to thank him for being great and so helpful!

I love this post, Erica. You two are a cute couple. I can’t wait to hear about the wedding. =)
It’s good that your stress is subsiding. Having a support system definitely does help!

    • Erica House says:

Thank you! I’m excited for the wedding but it will be nice to have it over with. Even though it’s super small it’s been a lot of stress to plan and we both don’t need any more stress in our lives! My dress doesn’t fit perfectly but otherwise I think the day is going to be perfect.

It has definitely been a combo of my mom, Matt (my boyfriend) and my gym buddy, Alex. They’ve been there for the extra support in different ways. My mom is my go-to for the hard days and when I need advice, like with finances. Matt is my everyday amazing human. And Alex – we are going through a Paleo challenge and lifting cycle together, and have become closer than ever. =) You and Travis are adorable — so happy you have him in your life!

Goodness I couldn’t have made it through the last few years without my Mom (or dad!) It’s always great to have someone motivate you in the health/fitness realm. Travis and I usually have a very good influence in that area on one another!

Love this post so so much! My mum and hubby are just angels that I don’t thank enough. I recently got my first grown up job (where everyone reads newspapers, most run marathons and… oh, and 90% of my colleagues are men) and I’m stressed out. Hubby and mum have been very kind and supportive, I need to spend more time with them to thank them for all they have to put up with!!

What a great post, Erica! It’s so important to remember all the people who give “extra” to us. Travis certainly sounds like he is one heck of an awesome guy. Thanks for sharing! #client
