Weekend Road Trip: Sweet Home Alabama

June 23rd, 2014 | Posted by Erica House in Life

This weekend I took a mini road trip to hang out in middle-of-nowhere Alabama. I packed up some healthy snacks, tried to convince Salem I wasn’t leaving him for good, and hit the road.

2014-06-20 15.48.33I went there to hang out with someone awesome (hinthint winkwink say no more) and explore an area I’ve never been to. When he was last in town I took him to one of my favorite museums, the Naval Aviation Museum, so he returned the favor and escorted me around the Army Aviation Museum. Ever since I watched the 14 hour documentary The War I’ve been so fascinated about military history.

2014-06-21 11.35.20We went and saw 22 Jump Street Saturday afternoon which I thought was hilarious. I watched This is The End recently and I can never look at Channing Tatum the same. That night we cooked a delicious veggie stir fry with brown rice and chicken (his) and faux chicken (hers.) After dinner we both had a major sweet tooth so this happened. I think this is the first real ice cream I’ve had in years (I usually do frozen yogurt or Arctic Zero.)
2014-06-21 19.00.53My life will never be the same. I think the pint was gone within 10 minutes. Hey – 80/20 ya’ll, it’s all about moderation.

Sunday we played disc golf. Well, he and a friend played and I was the unofficial cheerleader/score keeper. It’s hot as hell in the South right now so even going out as early as we did it was pretty painful. Fortunately, I was occupied with picking wild blackberries for a while and that totally made up for the heat.

2014-06-22 10.11.29On both the drive there and back I ran into some nasty weather. I HATE driving at night or in the rain as my vision is atrocious, so of course I hit rain both times. And of course I was stupid enough to take a photo of it.

2014-06-20 17.20.48Other than wishing the weekend could have lasted about 5 days longer I had a wonderful time. I managed to get a good run in on Saturday after last weeks overheating episode, but I’m not feeling to well again now. I think I’m just wearing myself a bit thin and even as I write this I’m thinking of 100 things I need to do before I leave for Fitbloggin on Thursday. I will manage, I always do, but it will be nice to have a travel free schedule for the next few weeks!

How was your weekend?

Does driving in the night/rain freak you out?

  • Weekends like that end way too quick :) I too hate driving in the dark/rain and feel like I’m about 80 years old every time I’m put in that situation. I used to eat ben & jerrys in high school and on the rare occasion I have ice cream now I’ll have that since there’s a store in my town. Their flavors are awesome. Also I tried arctic zero once and was annoyed to say the least since it tasted like favorless frozen water. Never again!

I’m so glad I’m not the only one almost incapable of driving in weather like that!
I LOVE arctic zero but I’ll always warn people I recommend it to that half the people who’ve tried it hate it. I think it tastes good enough and hits the spot when I’m craving something cool and sweet!

so much so Id fly everywhere if I could—or hand over the keys :)
Im a control abdicator when it comes to driving PERIOD.

I know just how you feel about wearing yourself too thin. Hope you get it all done by Thursday and keep taking care of yourself. Sounds like this weekend in Alabama was the perfect way to do just that!

LOVE military history! GREATLY DISLIKE driving in the weather or at night. I feel like my vision is totally off during those times. No depth perception and glare from headlights. No bueno.

  • Picking berries! very cool! It is pretty nasty here too in AZ. I have to get up at 4 to get out the door by 4:30 to get my long runs in. By 8am, it’s already in the 90’s. Driving at night shouldn’t be hard if I wore my contacts or glasses =). But i’m kindah lazy…

Phish food used to be my all time favorite flavor of ice cream. In college most Friday nights my friends and I would all go and get pints of ice cream, and slowly eat it throughout the week. Then I became lactose intolerant, so I haven’t had it in about 7 years now. It’s good stuff!

  • Salem does not look happy about the fact that you were leaving in that picture. haha I’m glad you had a good time in Alabama- I’ve never been!

  • Helen says:

That’s awesome that you had a great weekend. I would totally finish the whole pint of ice cream myself. haha.
Don’t wear yourself out too thin. Take a break if you need to. =)

  • Other than wishing the weekend could have lasted about 5 days longer <<- I know what you mean!! It was waterworks when I left Portland recently :)

  • I hate driving in bad weather. Yuck! But dannnng I want some of that ben & jerry’s :) It looks SO good!

  • Krista says:

Glad you gad a fun weekend…in a wink wink kinda way)! ;) I HATE driving in the rain, but prefer driving at over day driving…it feels more relaxing to me.

Also, I’ve been telling myself for months to make your cauliflower/chickpea curry and finally made it tonight. Holy yum!!! It’s sooooooo good! I know it will be even better tomorrow! Thanks for sharing that recipe. :)

    • Erica House says:

I could definitely see how night driving would be relaxing! Less people on the road is a big perk. If my eyesight wasn’t so awful I’d prefer that as well.

SO HAPPY you liked the cauliflower chickpea curry! I just made up another batch last week. It’s so inexpensive, easy, and filling!

  • Gotta’ love road trips! Minus the rain, of course. Glad you had a great weekend and got home safe :)
