{My reviews of the DVD’s listed above can be found here}
I started off this week of workouts absolutely destroying my upper body (in the best way possible.) That Bob Harper DVD is no joke. My chest, biceps and shoulders were sore for 2 days after. Love that burn! Sunday I was able to do my first ‘long’ run since my injury a few weeks ago. It felt incredible! I naturally had to come home and indulge in my favorite post-run snack:
Tuesday I ran again, 5 miles, and it was hot and humid. I forgot what running in that type of weather was like. My hair was stick straight before I left the house and this is what it looked like when I got back:
Don’t get me wrong, I love the natural curl in my hair, but I keep it straightened during the week as I feel it looks more ‘professional’ for teaching. Wednesday I did the Killer Ab’s DVD which, if you’ve read my DVD reviews you already know, I’m not a fan of. At all. I like level 1 and I decided to give level 2 another shot. Not loving it. The moves seem scattered, ineffective, and I only burned about 100 calories during the 30 minutes (versus 150 when I do her 6 week 6 pack.)
This week I’ve been able to try out a few products that were sent to me to review. First up, these divine smelling dish soaps from Palmolive.
My favorite is definitely the lemon scented one. It takes me about 2 months to go through a bottle of dish soap so I may be nice and give my Mom one to try. I looked at other reviews of this stuff online and apparently it’s flying off the shelves and people are having a hard time finding it!
Next up, the seriously mind-blowing good chips from Food Should Taste Good. These actually arrived the day after I watched Hungry for Change and I decided to start trying to cut out as many chemicals and unnatural ingredients as I could. I was scared to look at the ingredients of the 3 bags I got to try but imagine my surprise when I saw there were only a few ingredients and every single one was a natural product! My favorite was definitely the Multigrain:
Ingredients: Stone Ground Corn, High Oleic Sunflower Oil and/or Safflower Oil and/or Canola Oil, Brown Rice Flour, Flax Seeds, Evaporated Cane Juice, Oat Fiber, Sesame Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Quinoa, Soy Flour, Sea Salt. See anything in there you can’t pronounce? Nope. Delicious. Even better? They were on sale at Everman’s last week. I may or may not have gone through the 3 bags already. Don’t judge me.
Another thing I became totally obsessed with this week was microwaving sweet potatoes. Since it’s been on the warmer side again I’ve hesitated turning the oven on and I decided to dice up potato and try putting it in the microwave for 5 minutes (with a damp towel covering the bowl and stirring halfway through.) It worked! It definitely didn’t taste nearly as good as roasted but I’m glad I found a way to enjoy one of my favorite foods without having the oven on for 45 minutes.
It should shock no one that I covered it with honey and cardamom.
The big race is tomorrow and I hope you all will be sending me positive vibes! I’m pretty nervous my knee will randomly give out and I won’t be able to finish it. I’m taking the day off from working out and will spend a decent amount of time stretching, rolling, icing and heating my glutes. My time may be crap but I really don’t care as long as I can cross that finish line!
I’ll leave you with this photo I shared on Twitter yesterday when someone asked me why I like to plank:
Of course that’s not all due to planking, but they sure do help! Don’t forget to enter my Plank challenge that starts Monday!

Love the last picture! Good luck at tomorrow’s race!
Eeek – thank you! Not excited about a 4 a.m. wake up time but I can’t imagine how great I’ll feel when I’m done!
Hi there! Have just recently following you on Twitter. Nice workouts and great work! Very inspirational :)
Just out of curiosity, I couldn’t help but see that most foods you are eating are grain and legume based. I pretty well know myself that is common wisdom in the endurance world that this kind of starchy carbs are the stapple for energy and performance, but I’m pretty sure that being so present on the web as you are you’ll also have heard about all the paleo movement and their concern about grains.
What are your thoughts about?
Glad you found me!
Honestly, I don’t follow any dietary ‘programs’ or ‘rules’ (aside from being a vegetarian.) I have learned through the years what my body works best with and my diet is probably 50% veggies and the rest evenly split between protein, carbs & a healthy dose of fat. I’ll usually eat as much fruits, veggies, lean protein & healthy fats as I want and the only thing I try to keep in moderation is carbs; not because I think there’s anything wrong with them, just because they are so calorie rich it’s easy to eat way to much (for me!)
I see, is more or less the same approach I have been doing from some years until now but I have always had a hard time getting below 10% bodyfat with grains, also I noticed that if I ever went more than 150 grs of carbs a day with too much grains I started to feel pretty bloated and bad, now I’m almost all leafy-green based and some low GI fruit for cabs. Will keep an eye on you, nice to chat a little bit ;)
I think to reach that low level of body fat you would have to swap out some carbs for more protein. I agree – if I eat to many carbs I start to feel bloated and lethargic, yet another reason why I eat them in moderation!
Your arms are freakin awesome. You’ll do great at your race! Positive attitude :)
I’m going to spend some time meditating tonight and visualizing a pain-free run!
Awesome job and good luck!
Thank you!
BAM!
My gun collections not nearly as big as yours, but I’m working on it ;)
Holy smokes, Batman! Your shoulders are amaaaazing. I may just have to give this daily plank thing a try. I have ZERO upper body strength.
I was like that when I started working out! Couldn’t stay in plank for more than 15 seconds. Definiely not the case anymore :) You should join us!
How long have you been at this now? The plank, that is.
I’ve been doing plank exercises regularly since I started working out a few years ago, but I didn’t start holding them as long as I could until a few months ago!
Good luck tomorrow! =)
I’m going to join your plank challenge! I just got done with a January one where you got up to 5minutes (which I actually still need to do because I woke up with a kink in my neck and a sore back yesterday, so I figured I shouldn’t aggravate it more), but I’m not quite ready to take a break on the planks yet. lol
I’m glad you are joining us! My goal for the end of the month’s challenge is 4 min (although secretly I’m hoping for 5!)
You’re hair looks awesome in the humidity. Seriously, I’d kill for my hair to naturally do that. So pretty!
Good luck tomorrow! If anything at least you’ll look good doing it ;)
Thank you! My hair is actually much curlier than that naturally, I’ll have to post pictures of it soon :)
Mine too! But when it strays from straightened, it just gets…bigger. Lol. I’d like to see it! :)
I love Bob Harper’s Pure Burn video! It is challenging and in good/fun way. “I love Bob” Ha Ha
I’m usually too impatient to roast potatoes so I microwave them quite often – they are a little more mushy but still good.
I noticed mine had a slight … metallic taste to it. Subtle, and I’m still nuking them in the microwave every few days, but definitely not quite as good as roasted!
LOOKATTHOSEARMS!!
My secret weapons!! No one expects ‘em :)
Wishing you much luck tomorrow! Remember– finishing is winning! :-)
I thought of you yesterday when I got my Runners World mag in the mail. Its the Injury Prevention Special
“finishing is winning! :-)” I will seriously be using that as my motto for the last mile! Will stop by Barnes and Nobel this weekend to read the Runners World mag, thanks for the heads up!
Good luck tomorrow! Looking forward to reading about it.
Ty! I just got back from the race expo and am officially nervous >.<
KILLER arms Erica!
